IPL 2020 Auction: These CPL players are likely to attract huge bids

The 2019 CPL saw many new players making an impact, but this West Indies player is likely to fetch big at the IPL 2020 auctions.

The seventh season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) concluded with the Barbados Tridents emerging as victorious in the finals. Jason Holder’s men overcame the favorites, Guyana Amazon Warriors to lift the trophy with a fine performance when it mattered the most.

The Tridents, who had earlier won the title in 2014 became the third team after Trinbago Knight Riders and Jamaica Tallawahs to account for multiple titles in the history of the league.

West Indies as we know are known to be the premier hot spot for T20 cricket around the world. Apart from showcasing their talent in the T20 World Cups, the Caribbean players have also impressed in the domestic T20 leagues around the world; especially IPL.

After the buzz of exciting performances from the CPL players, the action and drama now switch to the IPL 2020 auctions, which are supposed to take place at Kolkata on December 19.

While this auction is a prelude to the mega-auctions in 2021, and it is most likely we would not see big bucks being spent by the teams, there is a high possibility that the 2019’s lower-ranked teams could look to buy some of these hot properties.

So, we thought of compiling a list of 3 CPL players who could fetch big bucks at the IPL 2020 auctions.

#3: Rahkeem Cornwall | St. Lucia Zouks | 254 runs

Rahkeem Cornwell recently made news during India’s Tour of West Indies when the 26-year-old became the heaviest international cricketer to play Cricket.

Anyway, the talented all-rounder had a superb CPL 2019, and he impressed many with his destructive batting abilities. The sturdy cricketer scored 254 runs this season at a strike rate of 190.97 with 25 fours and 20 sixes.

Rahkeem impressed with his big scores in the tournament. In his team’s first game against Jamaica Tallawahs, the all-rounder struck 75 runs from just 30 balls. This knock included 8 huge hits out of the park. When he met this team again, Rahkeem did well once more with a neat fifty of 25 balls in the encounter.

Not to forget, the St. Lucia Zouks’ player is also a handy player with the ball. In the 41 T20 games that he has played, Rahkeem has picked 22 wickets, and has emphasized his all-rounder-tag.

Considering his hitting abilities, and a potential bowler who could give few overs, Rakhheem Cornwall could certainly attract few bids at the IPL 2020 auctions.

Teams that could go after him: Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

#2: Hayden Walsh Jr. | Barbados Tridents | 22 wickets

After a fine show in CPL 2019, the 27-year-old, Hayden Walsh is all set to make his debut for West Indies in the coming days against Afghanistan.

Hayden Walsh is a talented leg-spinner who has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. While he tends to leak runs at times,  he often makes up for it with consistent wickets.

Walsh proved his credentials as a reliable leg-spinner with 22 wickets in the recently concluded CPL.  Although his economy of 8.28 was on the higher side, his strike-rate of 9.1 helped his team on many occasions.

Hayden Walsh has a knack of picking wickets, a feature that would interest the IPL franchises. In a run-heavy competition like IPL, timely wickets are crucial and that is here Walsh ticks all the boxes.

Teams that could go after him: Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.

#1: Brandon King | Guyana Amazon Warriors | 496 runs

Brandon King has done his reputation well to find a team for IPL 2020. The opener lit up the CPL in a literal sense with his sensational performances. King scored 496 runs in CPL 2019, and finished as the best batsman of the tournament. His strike-rate of 148.94, and an average of 55.11 played a big part in his team’s flawless run to the finals.

He scored half-centuries consistently, and his century in the Qualifier 1 proved his solid sense of temperament. His 132* run knock from 72 balls against Tridents was a true master-class. The knock included ten boundaries and eleven sixes.

A destructive opener is a must for any IPL batting line-up, and there are Teams who could be eyeing him in the auctions. Moreover, he would also have another shot against Afghanistan to prove his credentials before the 2020 IPL auctions go live.

Teams that could go after him: Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings.

Of these three, Brandon King is most likely to fetch big bucks at the IPL 2020 auctions.
