India vs SL 2020: 1st T20I Stats Preview and Predicted Playing 11

India vs SL 2020: Jasprit Bumrah returns to the squad as we look at the stats preview, and the predicted playing 11 for the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka.

Occasion  First T20I, India vs Sri Lanka
Location  Guwahati
Date & Time  Sunday, 5th January 2020, 7 pm

It has been over two years since India last played Sri Lanka in a bilateral series. Hardly have we seen such a rare moment in the history of these two teams when they haven’t played any competitive cricket against each other for such a long time.

Nevertheless, the last time Sri Lanka toured India, Rohit Sharma breathe fire with the joint-fastest century (35 balls) for India in T20I cricket. Jaydev Unadkat was awarded the player of the series (Yes, you read that right). However, none of these players are playing the upcoming T20I series.

Overall, Sri Lanka have played India 16 times with India emerging victorious 11 times, while Sri Lanka winning it 5 times. Considering the pool of players currently in Sri Lanka’s squad, it looks highly unlikely if they can compete with this Indian Team.

The three-match T20I series would act as a prelude to the T20I World Cup scheduled in Australia later this year. For India, batting almost looks fixed, but they would be trying multiple bowling combinations in the absence of Bhuvi, Shami, and Chahar.

India have been the most successful Team in 2019 across the format. They would once again like to begin the year 2020 on a bang to set the tone for the rest of the year. On that note, let’s look at the stats preview, and the predicted playing 11 for the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka.

Overall Matches Played: 16

India: 11 Wins || Sri Lanka: 5 Wins

289- Most Runs by Rohit Sharma (IND)

94.3- Best Batting Average (Min 3 inns) by Virat Kohli (IND)

178.4- Highest Strike Rate (Min 3 inns) by Virender Sehwag (IND)

118(43)- Highest Score by Rohit Sharma (IND)

30- Most Fours by Virat Kohli (IND)

14– Most Sixes by Rohit Sharma (IND)

14- Most Wickets by Yuzvendra Chahal (IND)

8.6- Best Bowling Average (Min 3 inns) by Ravichandran Ashwin (IND)

4.9- Lowest Economy Rate (Min 3 inns) by Ravichandran Ashwin (IND)

4/8- Best Bowling figures by Ravichandran Ashwin (IND)

2- Most 4-wicket haul by Yuzvendra Chahal ( IND)

Openers: Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul

Since Shikhar Dhawan suffered the injury in the 2019 World Cup, KL Rahul has been in scintillating form as an opener. Never for a moment did he let us miss Dhawan with his superb display of batting. However, Dhawan, as we all know has been the primary opening choice for Team India.

With Rohit Sharma rested for the series, and time running out, this series should act as a virtual final between Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul with one of them emerging as winner for the second opening slot alongside senior pro, Rohit Sharma.

Middle-order: Virat Kohli (C), Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant (WK)

The middle-order debate seems to have been settled for the time being with key contributions from Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. The wicket-keeper especially was at his atrocious best in the last ODI series smashing 117 runs at a strike rate of 128.6.

The talented, Manish Pandey and Sanju Samson would have to wait for a couple of matches to get a game in the series. If India lead the series 2-0, we could see at least one of them featuring in the playing 11.

All-rounders: Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja

In the absence of Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube would once again act as the fast-bowling all-rounder, and he would like to stamp his name as the second choice all-rounder of the team. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja would fill up the remaining two all-rounder spots.

Bowlers: Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Navdeep Saini

While Yuzvendra Chahal has been the best bowler for India against Sri Lanka with 14 wickets, Team management’s preference of Kuldeep above him means, Chahal would have to once again sit out unless India goes in with 4 spinners.

Meanwhile, Indian fans would be enthralled to see Jasprit Bumrah back in the squad. The Pacer had been suffering from an injury for quite some time now. He would lead the pace attack alongside Navdeep Saini, who should hold on to the second Pacer slot.

India vs SL First T20I Predicted Playing 11 for Team India:

Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli (C), Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(WK), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Navdeep Saini, and Jasprit Bumrah

India vs SL First T20I Predicted Playing 11 for Sri Lanka:

Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera (WK), Avishka Fernando, Oshada Fernando, Angelo Mathews, Shehan Jayasuriya, Isuru Udana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lasith Malinga (C), and Lakshan Sandakan.
