Prithvi Shaw, one of the best batsmen to win the ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ award in IPL 2020.
Rohit Sharma, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, etc. – the list of emerging player of the year (EPOY) award being won by the batsmen is endless. So much so that out of 12 EPOY winners, 9 are being won by the batsmen.
The year 2020 seems no different as there is a pool of talented batsmen itching to make a mark in the Tournament. But, to win this prestigious award, mere talent isn’t enough; you need to be a consistent member of the playing 11.
So, which are the Batsmen, who could be a consistent member of the playing 11, and have a great chance of winning the award. Here is the list of 3 batsmen, who can win the Emerging Player of the Year award in IPL 2020
Before that, let’s quickly re-look at the requirements to qualify for this award.
- Should be born on or after 1 April 1993
- Must have played five or fewer Test matches or 20 or less ODIs.
- Should have played 25 or fewer IPL matches (at of the start of the season)
- Should not have won the Emerging Player award in the past.
Please note, the requirement for IPL 2020 isn’t out yet. However, going by the trend, except for the age factor, the rest of the things should remain the same.
#3: Devdutt Padikkal (RCB)
Having top-scored in the 2019 editions of Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Devdutt Padikkal has firmly established himself as the player to watch out for in IPL 2020.
The left-handed batsman is a great timer of the ball, and is known for his ability to score boundaries consistently. All of these bonds well with the IPL format, and hence, Devdutt Padikkal could well announce himself in the IPL.
However, all is not gold for Devdutt as RCB will have to tweak their playing XI if Devdutt has to play at the top. With Parthiv Patel the only domestic wicket-keeper in the team, Aaron Finch will have to play in the middle-order to accommodate Devdutt at the top as playing him in the middle-order would not be wise.
#2: Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR)
Yashasvi Jaiswal is in the form of his life, as runs have been coming thick and fast for the teenager. At the U19 World Cup too, Yashasvi has ranked himself miles above the other batsmen in the competition with solid performances, and is a leading run-scorer of the tournament.
In the kind of form, he is right now, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Yashasvi plays as the opener above Robin Uthappa in the Rajasthan Royals playing XI. Moreover, Yashasvi has been performing with the ball too, therefore giving that extra balance to the squad.
If Yashasvi gets to play as many matches, and continues his form in the IPL, he could be a serious contender for the prestigious Emerging Player of the Year award.
#1: Prithvi Shaw (DC)
Having played exactly 25 games in IPL till now, Prithvi makes himself eligible for this award next season. Hence, automatically, Prithvi also becomes the favorite to go home with the 2020 edition of this prize.
The young Mumbai cricketer has been in sensational form ever since his return from the ban, scoring runs at will, and enhancing his reputation as India’s most-talented young batsman at the moment.
At Delhi Capitals, Prithvi is likely to start ahead of Ajinkya Rahane in the line-up, owing to his better-attacking instincts. Hence, with 14 games and tremendous talent in hand, Prithvi is almost certain to win this award in 2020.
