IPL 2020: 3 Bowlers who can win the Emerging Player of the Year

Rahul Chahar among the strongest bowlers to win the ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ award in IPL 2020.

‘Emerging Player of the Year’ (EPOY) is the trophy awarded to the breakthrough performer of every IPL season. While young batsmen, bowlers, all-rounders compete for this honor, it has been the batsmen who have come out on top on 9 occasions in the last twelve seasons.

There is a reason why young bowlers find it difficult to win this award. Being inexperienced at this level, franchises tend to pick bowlers who are used to the format and the conditions. If the youngsters get a game too, they have only 24 balls to impress, and in case they meander for a few minutes on the pitch, getting the nod for another match can also become tough.

However, the upcoming season will play host to a couple of exciting bowlers who can win the EPOY award. These bowlers can pick wickets at regular intervals, and would be a crucial part of their respective teams.

Before we look at 3 bowlers who can claim the Emerging Player of the Year award in IPL 2020, let’s quickly re-look at the requirements to qualify for this award.

  • Should be born on or after 1st April, 1993
  • Must have played five or fewer Test matches or 20 or less ODIs.
  • Should have played 25 or fewer IPL matches (at of the start of the season)
  • Should not have won the Emerging Player award in the past.

Please note, the requirement for IPL 2020 isn’t out yet. However, going by the trend, except for the age factor, the rest of the things should remain the same

#3: Ishan Porel – Kings XI Punjab

The talented pacer from Bengal has had a brilliant beginning to his career so far. After his successful stint with the India U19 team, Ishan is now a regular member of India A team, and is knocking the doors of the selectors. In his short T20 career so far Ishan Porel has picked up 16 wickets from 14 games at an economy of just 6.11, which is impressive given he is a new ball bowler.

He would be representing the Kings XI Punjab team in IPL 2020 after bring procured for his base price of  INR 20L. Given that KXIP do not boast of another quality Indian fast-bowler in their line-up apart from Mohammed Shami, it is inevitable that Ishan Porel will play a decent amount of games for KXIP in IPL 2020.

While Ishan may not be the quickest of the bowlers, he packs a punch with his subtle variations and innate ability to read the game situation. All of this could work in his favor, and help him bag the ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ Trophy next season.

#2: Prasidh Krishna – Kolkata Knight Riders

Given the pool of talented pacers in KKR’s side, Prasidh Krishna is the most likely candidate to partner Pat Cummins with the ball for KKR next season. The Karnataka lad has been in immense form, and has more experience on the Eden Gardens pitch than the other Indian pacer in the squad.

Although the 11 games last season yielded just 4 wickets for the tall cricketer, Prasidh’s exceptional show in the 2019 edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy would help him start many games for KKR next season.

Capability wise, Prasidh belongs to the new breed of Indian fast-bowlers who ooze pace and bounce in abundance. If he can be more consistent, Prasidh is likely to pick plenty of wickets next season, and may even fancy his chances to represent India senior team for T20 World Cup 2020 as hinted by Virat Kohli.

#1: Rahul Chahar – Mumbai Indians

20-year-old, Rahul Chahar will have his hands full in the upcoming edition of IPL. With Krunal Pandya the only other established spinner in the squad, Rahul will get ample opportunities to showcase his skills in IPL 2020.

The Rajasthan cricketer was excellent in the previous edition as well. He played 13 games for the Mumbai Indians, and picked 12 wickets at an impressive economy of 6.55; that is quite exceptional.

Leg-spinners are an asset in this format, and with a bag of tricks already on his side, Rahul would be Rohit Sharma’s primary strategy to pick wickets during the middle-overs. Also, almost no other young bowler has as much experience as Rahul in the IPL and hence, he seems the strongest candidate to win this trophy.
