IPL 2019: Analyzing Strengths and Weaknesses of Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders had a decent run in their IPL 2018 campaign as they finished the tournament at the third position under the inspirational leadership of Dinesh Karthik. KKR collaborated very well as a team as they saw almost every player contributing to the team’s success.

Coming into the IPL 2019 campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders did some good recruitments and some forced ones. They added Joe Denly, Carlos Brathwaite, Anrich Nortje, Harry Gurney, Lockie Ferguson, Nikhil Naik, Shrikant Mundhe and Prithvi Raj to their squad.

So, let’s try to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad.

STRENGTHS:

Openers:

  • Kolkata Knight Riders have been one of the few sides who have been consistent with their opening combination.
  • Since the last few seasons, KKR have opened with the attacking duo of Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn. While, Robin Uthappa, whose primary role is of opening had to satisfy himself by batting at number three.

All-rounders:

  • It won’t be a surprise to say that Kolkata Knight Riders have the best all-rounders among all teams.
  • The duo of Sunil Narine and Andre Russel are effectively four players in two, and are probably one of the best in business. Apart from these two, Carlos Brathwaite is a fearsome all-rounder too.

Spinners:

  • After KXIP, Kolkata Knight Riders is the team to feature the best spin bowling attack.
  • The mystery spin of Sunil Narine and the wrist spin of Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla is enough to send nightmares to the batsmen.

WEAKNESSES:

Pace Bowling:

  • Perhaps, the only weakness in their squad. Again, don’t get me wrong. Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi and Prasidh Krishna are one of the best emerging prospects. However, they are still young, and the lack of experience might hurt KKR’s chances as they did in 2018

CONCLUSION:

Overall, Kolkata Knight Riders have a squad that can help improve their 2018 performance, and under the inspirational leadership of Dinesh Karthik, they will be eyeing their third IPL title.
