IPL 2019: Analyzing Strengths and Weaknesses of Sunrisers Hyderabad

Pace bowling, the highlight as we look at the strengths and weakness(es) of Sunriers Hyderabad (SRH) for IPL 2019.

Over the past few years, Sunrisers Hyderabad have really come of age with their performances. Last year, even without David Warner, SRH were runners-up under the leadership of Kane Williamson. The team saw some timely useful contributions from everyone in their team except Manish Pandey, who was once again a disappointment.

Anyway, coming to the IPL 2019 campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad already had a near to perfect squad barring for a few minor gaps. To address those, they added Martin Guptill, Jonny Bairstow, and Wridhimman Saha to their squad.

So, let’s try to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad for IPL 2019.

STRENGTHS:

Pace Bowling

Sunrisers Hyderabad have pace bowlers in a plethora. Not just in quality, their pace bowlers have supreme quality too. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the pace bowling attack along with either of Khaleel Ahmed or Siddharth Kaul.

Sandeep Sharma, Billy Stanlake, T Natarajan and Basil Thampi provide awesome backup options, and can be used depending on the combination and situation.

Spin Bowling:

Another strong area for the Sunrisers Hyderabad as SRH boasts some quality spinners. Rashid Khan, the best T20 bowler in the world adds tremendous value to the squad. He will be supported by Shakib Al Hasan, Shahbaz Nadeem and Mohammad Nabi depending on overseas player’s combination.

WEAKNESSES:

All-Rounders:

This is the only area of concern for the Sunrisers Hyderabad as Shakib Al-Hasan, Mohammad Nabi and Vijay Shankar are the available options in the all-rounder category.

While, Shakib Al Hasan is a good all-rounder, his counterparts, Nabi and Vijay Shankar are yet to prove their credentials in the T20 format and in the IPL.

SRH would have really liked a strong pace bowling all-rounder like Shane Watson, Andre Russel, Ben Stokes or Dwayne Bravo.

CONCLUSION:

Overall, Sunrisers Hyderabad have a slightly better squad as compared to last year, and if Kane Williamson captains their side again as expected, it would be very difficult to stop them from winning their second IPL title.
