MATCH SUMMARY:

Australia vs England: Aaron Finch, Jason Benrehdorff and Mitchell Starc shine in a sensational win for the mighty Aussies as they become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals at World Cup 2019.

Who would have thought that England, the favorites to win the tournament would find it difficult to qualify for the semi-finals?. Surprisingly, that’s what World Cup pressure does to you.

England now need to win both their matches to guarantee themselves a semi-final spot. A win could do too, but for that they need to defeat anyone of consistent India and New Zealand side, and hope Sri Lanka and Pakistan lose 1 match.

Anyway, batting first, Australia had a superb start as Warner and Finch added another 100 runs partnership.

After Warner’s wicket, Australia were going decently at 173-1 at the end of 32.1 overs, but, England made a superb comeback as they reduced Australia to 228-5 at the end of 41.5 overs.

Aaron Finch scored his second century of World Cup 2019, but got out the next ball to a poor shot. That tilted the game slightly in England’s favor, however, Alex Carrey’s superb cameo of 38(27) helped Australia reach a competitive total of 285-7 in 50 overs.

THE CHASE:

England needed 286 to chase in what looked like a difficult target to chase. It proved to be the same as they had a horrible start. The swinging Starc and Benrendorff provided three quick wickets that left England reeling at 26-3 after 6 overs.

England’s best batsmen, Root and Morgan failed to impress as they got out on 8(9) and 4(7) respectively.

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler did get a good start, but they failed to capitalize as they got dismissed on 27(39) and 25(27) respectively.

Ultimately, it all came down once again to Stokes, who once again looked determined to take England home. But, Mitchell Starc produced the ‘ball of the tournament’ as a stunning inswinging yorker took away his stumps; thus England’s hope to win the match.

In the end, England were bundled out for 221 in 44.4 overs as Jason Behrendorff bowled a magical spell of 5-44, while Starc produced a fabulous spell of 4-43.

So, with that win, Australia officially become the first team to qualify for the playoffs, while England’s semi-final dream now looks in jeopardy.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR ENGLAND?
