MATCH SUMMARY:

David Warner’s hundred inspires Australia to a close win against Pakistan as Mohammad Amir’s sensational spell goes in vain in Match 17 of World Cup 2019.

After being asked to bat first, Australian openers approached differently and positively as compared to their performance against India as they added 146 for the first wicket.

After Aaron Finch’s dismissed on 82(84), David Warner carried on as if he wanted to make a statement after his disappointing performance against India.

With Australia going smoothly at 223-2 in 33.3 overs, it looked as if they would reach 400, but Pakistani bowlers made a sensational comeback. Post Maxwell’s dismissal, Australia fell like the pack of cards as they lost their last 8 wickets for just 84 runs.

Mohammad Amir lead the bowling attack with his sensational spell of 5-30 in his 10 overs.

It was David Warner’s 107(111) with 11 fours and 1 six that helped Australia reach a competitive total of 307, else they looked in complete disarray.

THE CHASE:

After a sensational comeback towards the end,  Pakistan needed a solid opening partnership if they had to chase the daunting target of 308.

However, Fakhar Zaman threw his wicket in the second over as he got out for a duck.

Pakistan’s best batsman, Babar Azam then built a good partnership with Iman-ul-Haq, but a bad shot off Coulter-Nile ended his short cameo.

Slightly good recovery after that kept Pakistan in the hunt as they were going good at 135-2 after 25 overs. But, Pakistan and unpredictability go hand in hand as they lost their next 4 wickets for just 24 runs.

It needed something inspirational to bring Pakistan back into the game.

Hassan Ali with his aggressive 32(15) and Wahaz Riaz with his 45(39) gave Pakistan some hope, but 308 looked a daunting task for Pakistan as they fell short of the target by 41 runs.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR PAK?

  1. None of the Pakistani batsmen looked to play a longer knock as 53 was the highest score for Pakistan.
  2. No support to Mohammad Amir from other Pakistani bowlers.
  3. Surprising Team selection by dropping their main spinner, Shadab Khan.

KEY MOMENTS:

  1. Mohammad Amir’s exceptional first spell of 4-2-11-0.
  2. A sensational yorker by Shaheen Afridi to dismiss Glenn Maxwell in the 34th over
  3. Mohammed Hafeez throwing his wicket away in the 27th over.
  4. A good review by Australia which god rid of the dangerous, Wahaz Riaz
