MATCH SUMMARY:

Bangladesh may have lost the match, but they have won hearts once again as they went down fighting the mammoth total of 382 vs Australia at World Cup 2019.

Batting first, Australia had the same pattern which they have been following throughout the World Cup. David Warner player cautiously, while Aaron Finch played the aggressor as the duo added 121 for the first wicket.

Post Aaron Finch’s dismissal, Warner had a fantastic partnership with Usman Khawaja. The duo added 192 for the second wicket as David Warner brought his second century of World Cup 2019.

After being 119(127) at one stage, David Warner slaughtered the Bangladeshi bowlers as he smashed 47 from the next 20 balls to take his score to 166(147) with 14 fours and 5 sixes.

In the end, a solid knock of 89(72) by Usman Khawaja and a sweet cameo of 32(10) by Glenn Maxwell lifted Australia to a staggering 381-5 in 50 overs.

Surprisingly, part-timers and Soumya Sarkar had the best figures for Bangladesh as the latter bowled a decent spell of 3-58.

THE CHASE:

Bangladesh needed a miracle to chase in what could have been the ‘highest successful chase in World Cups’.

They may not have crossed the line, but the spirit, the determination and the willingness to chase the mammoth 381 have been absolutely commendable.

Except for Soumya Sarkar, who got out on of an unfortunate dismissal, all the other batsmen contributed significantly.

Tamim Iqbal scored 62(74), Shakib scored 41(41), Liton Das scored 20(17) and Mahmudullah scored 69(50) in the chase of 382.

It may not be fair to say this, but Rahim’s superb, but a rather slow knock of 102(97) could well be the reason why Bangladesh couldn’t cross the line. He should have accelerated when the RR was touching 14 in the last 10 overs.

Anyway, it has still been a spirited effort from Bangladesh as they lose the match by 48 runs.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR BANGLADESH?

  • Bangladesh bowlers’ inability to put pressure in the middle overs.
  • Bangladesh left too much in the end in the steep chase of 381.
  • A fantastic knock from Rahim, but he needed to be more aggressive in the chase of 382.

KEY MOMENTS:

  • Australia’s carnage off Rubel Hossain smashing 25 off the over.
  • Soumya Sarkar’s unfortunate run-out by Aaron Finch in the fourth over.
  • Marcus Stoinis’s brilliant cutter to dismiss the consistent, Shakib Al Hasan in the 19th over.
  • Mahmadullah’s dismissal ended Bangladesh’s hopes in the chase of 382.
