Australia started the defense of their 2015 World Cup crown with an empathetic win over Afghanistan in the fourth match of World Cup 2019
Batting first, Afghanistan were rocked back by the pace and swing of Mitchell Starc, who bowled a fierce inswinger to uproot Mohammad Shahzad’s stumps.
Afghanistan, however, recovered slightly as they managed to put 207 on the board with the help of some useful cameos from Rahmat Shah (43), Gulbadin Naib (31) and Najibullah Zadran (51).
Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa took 3 wickets each, while Marcus Stoinis took 2 wickets for Australia.
Chasing 208, Aaron Finch gave Australia an aggressive start, while David Warner played second fiddle to him.
Aaron finch showed no mercy to Afghanistan’s bowlers as he attacked right from the first over. It looked as if Aaron Finch was in a T20 mode as he reached his fifty in just 40 deliveries, while David Warner was playing at 20(40).
Once Finch got out on 66(49) in the 17th over, David Warner took the role of the aggressor as he got to his second consecutive fifty against Afghanistan in World Cup.
In the end, Australia chased the target in 34.5 overs with 7 wickets in hand.
David Warner top-scored with 89(114) with 8 fours as he marked a scintillating comeback in One Day Internationals for Australia.
While Afghanistan lost the match, they should take some confidence from the fact that they played better than their Asian counterparts, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
