Player of the Match: Joe Root
MATCH SUMMARY:
Joe Root smashed a brilliant century and took 2 important wickets as England comprehensively defeated West Indies by 8 wickets at World Cup 2019.
The team filled with superstars, West Indies have had yet another bad performance with the bat.
The more we look at them bat, the more we get the feeling that they are better-off playing only the T20s.
The lack of big partnerships, the inability of players to play longer innings, and the fact that their act of dominating the bowling is the cause of their destruction. That’s how you would explain the batting woes of the West Indies team.
Batting first, Chris Gayle scored a decent 36, but ultimately perished on an attempted pull, while Shai Hope gave a horror performance in his 11(30).
Andre Russell, on the other hand, has had ‘I am the best’ mindset, and that has actually been his biggest weakness in this World Cup. He scored 21(16), but got out to a reckless shot.
Shimron Hetmyer’s 39(46) and Nicholas Pooran’s 67(78) did revive West Indies slightly, but they were ultimately bundled out on 212-10 in 44.4 overs. Meanwhile, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood took 3 wickets each for England.
THE CHASE:
Chasing 213, England needed a fantastic start as it was highly unlikely they would have seen Jason Roy or Eoin Moran bat, after their injury on the field.
Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes did exactly the same as England outclassed West Indies completely in the chase.
Joe Root scored a brilliant century, while Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes played handy knocks as England chased the target of 213 in 33.1 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
For West Indies, only Shannon Gabriel could take wickets as all the other bowlers went wicket less.
WHAT WENT WRONG FOR WI?
- Lack of big partnerships while batting.
