MATCH SUMMARY:

World Cup 2019, Bangladesh vs Pakistan: Pakistan may have not qualified for the semi-finals, but have ended their campaign with pride.

‘Only if’ Pakistan had scored 500 batting first, the semi-final qualification scenario would have aligned to their 1992 campaign with New Zealand being the one to take the flight back to Wellington.

Jokes apart, it has been a dominating performance from the Men in Green, who wouldn’t be disappointed with a win, even though they would have liked to qualify for the semi-finals.

Batting first, Pakistan approach wasn’t aligned with the statement Sarfaraz Ahmed had made in the press conference, where he talked about Pakistan scoring 500 batting first.

Fakhar Zaman played a horrendous knock of 13(31) as Pakistan had a poor start of 23-1 at the end of 7.2 overs. Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam then built a steady partnership as they added 157 for the second wicket with the consistent, Babar Azam scoring 96(98).

Another good partnership between Imam and Hafeez meant Pakistan were going good at 246-2 at the end of 41.4 overs. However, Pakistan being Pakistan lost 3 quick wickets as they were reduced to 255-5 at the end of 44 overs.

It looked as if they would not even cross the minimum expected target of 311, but a decent cameo of 43(25) from Imad Wasim meant Pakistan ended on 315-9 in 50 overs.

THE CHASE

Being the only side to have chased more than 250 in this tournament, Bangladesh had confidence behind them while chasing 316.

They did start decently, but after quick wickets, it was all once again a Shakib show. Shakib, as he has been in this tournament, scored another superb fifty that kept Bangladesh in the hunt. But, the lack of support from the end meant it was too much for them.

The pace of Shaheen proved too lethal for Bangladesh as he took important wickets whenever he was brought back with a fresh spell.

He ended the match by becoming the youngest to take a 5-fer in a World Cup as Pakistan won the match by 94 runs. Shaheen’s spell of 6-37 is also the best spell by any Pakistani bowler in World Cups.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR BANGLADESH?

  • The middle-overs where Bangladesh couldn’t take any wicket.
  • The death bowling woes where they took wickets, but went for plenty of runs.
  • The same old problem of dependency on Shakib with the lack of ownership at the other end.
