A thrilling run-curtailed low scoring match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka finished with Afghanistan going down fighting at World Cup 2019.
Batting first, Sri Lanka had a fantastic start as their openers added 92 for the first wicket in just 13 overs.
At one stage, Sri Lanka were cruising along at 143-1 in 21 overs, however, Mohammad Nabi derailed the Sri Lankan batting order as he picked up 3 wickets in an over.
Sri Lanka then suffered a horrendous collapse as they were reduced to 180-8 after being 143-2 at one stage. With Rain God intervening the match, Sri Lanka were eventually bundled out for a meager 201-10 in 36.5 overs.
Kusal Perera top-scored for Sri Lanka with his fantastic 78(81), while Dimuth Karunaratne added a decent 30(45).
Mohammad Nabi took 4 important top-order wickets, while Rashid Khan bowled an economical spell of 2-17 as they led the Afghanistan bowling.
Chasing the revised target of 187 in 41 overs due to D/L method, Afghanistan openers started positively as Hazratullah Zazai took the attack to the opposition. They added 34 for the first wicket in 4.4 overs.
However, as soon as Mohammad Shahzad got out, Afghanistan lost the track as they were reduced to 57-5 in 13.5 overs; courtesy of some serious pace bowling by the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Gulbadin Naib and Najibullah Zadran then built a good partnership, but it wasn’t enough as Afghanistan fell short of the target by 34 runs.
Nuwan Pradeep picked up 4 crucial wickets, while, Lasith Malinga bought all his variations to remove the tail as he picked up 3 wickets.
So, after a humiliating defeat to New Zealand, Sri Lanka register their maiden win at World Cup 2019.
