CWC 19: Twitter bursts after magical upset by Sri Lanka over England
As Sri Lanka cause a major upset by defeating England in a low scoring thriller, we capture some of the best Twitter reactions.
Srilanka have done an unthinkable as they caused a major upset by defeating the tournament favorites, England in a low scoring thriller.
Batting first, Sri Lankan batsmen didn’t have a good time as they could only manage 232 on the board in 50 overs.
Angelo Mathews played a sensible knock of 85(115), while he was equally supported by Kusal Mendis (46) and Avishka Fernando (49).
For England, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood took 3 wickets each, while Adil Rashid took 2 wickets.
Defending 232, Lasith Malinga brought all his experience into the picture as his slower yorkers, slower loopers and perfect out-swingers proved very lethal.
He got Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck, then bowled a perfect out-swinger to set up James Vince, and a perfect swinging yorker to Jos Buttler, which was to me the turning point of the match.
Sri Lanka did play a gamble by completing Malinga’s quota in the 45th over, which could have gone horribly wrong, however, luck favored them as Ben Stokes was left strangled at the one end as wickets kept crumbling at the other end.
In the end, Ben Stokes remained not-out on 82(89) as England were bundled-out for 212 in 47 overs.
So, here’s the collection of some of the best Twitter reactions after today’s magical upset by Sri Lanka over England.
TWITTER REACTIONS ENGLAND VS SRI LANKA:
Brilliant stuff from Sri Lanka.
What they didn't do with the bat, they more than compensated with the ball.
Malinga and Co. were disciplined & troubled the batsmen.
With England still needing to play Australia, New Zealand & India, the #CWC19 may throw up a few surprises.#ENGvSL pic.twitter.com/T4mHATZiz2— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) June 21, 2019
Excellent performance from Sri Lanka to beat England.
England have India, Australia and New Zealand to play with and will have to win 2 out of these 3.

That was an alarming defeat for England who appear to have struggled to adapt to conditions with the bat again. There will be huge pressure on their three remaining matches. They are still well placed to qualify but a top two finish is in serious danger. #CWC19

This #CWC19 was heading towards many dead rubbers. Today's result has changed that and I am looking at the matches to come through a different lens

Stokes’s brilliance overshadowed by Sri Lanka. Sensational performance from a team that looked beaten before it had taken the field. The 2 Ms, Mathews and Malinga did it for them. Mathews’a knock gave team hope, but Malinga’s bowling won the day. He’s my MOM
