What an amazing start to the Vivo IPL 2021 it has been as the Royal Challengers Bangalore just got off from a corner by defeating Mumbai Indians by 2 wickets. Thanks to Ab de Villiers, who held the nerve for RCB to get RCB in a winning position. However, RCB being RCB almost choked the chase before winning on the last ball of the innings. 

We are now on to match 2 of IPL 2021 as last year’s runners-up, Delhi Capitals take on the most consistent side in the history of IPL, the Chennai Super Kings. While Delhi Capitals would be without their preferred captain, Shreyas Iyer and a few important players due to quarantine rules, for CSK, this year it is more of redemption after their poor performance in IPL 2020.

The match would be played at a neutral venue of Mumbai due to new IPL rules where home advantage has been eliminated. The pitch at Mumbai is generally suited for high scoring and pace bowling. Hence, both the teams would have to strategize around bringing in more pacers into the play.

The first question for CSK would be to decide their opening combination. The last few matches of IPL 2020 saw Faf du Plessis and youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad opening the batting for CSK. Gaikwad has done extremely well smashing 3 back-to-back fifties. However, with the addition of Robin Uthappa, things might get interesting. 

While Faf du Plessis is confirmed to open, one of Ruturaj Gaikwad or Robin Uthappa should play as the second opener. Of the two, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who had shown good signs in 2020 should be preferred more. Hence, Uthappa would have to warm the bench initially.

The remaining batting-order should see the experienced Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, and MS Dhoni. As this is a pacey wicket, Moeen Ali might have to sit out, and in place of him, either of Dwayne Bravo or Lungi Ngidi should be selected. The all-rounder duties shall once again rely on Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.

The bowling should see the Indian pacers, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar taking the centre stage. Unlike last year, CSK should play the wicket-taker, Imran Tahir in all their matches. Middle-overs is where CSK struggled the most to take wickets, and they would not want to repeat the same mistake.

The absence of Delhi Capitals’ leader, Shreyas Iyer has given the dynamic wicket-keeper batsman, Rishabh Pant an opportunity to bring in fresh energy and ideas to the table. Much like his baiting, if Rishabh Pant is aggressive in his captaincy, Delhi would go a long way. 

Talking about the team selection, Delhi Capitals would be without four of their first-choice players who represented them in IPL 2020. The list includes Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Axar Patel. While Iyer is ruled out due to injury, Rabada and Nortje are currently serving Quarantine, and Axar is recovering from COVID. 

Luckily enough, Delhi Capitals have good back-ups in place to replace these players. Hence, in place of these 4, Prithvi Shaw, Chris Woakes, Tom Curran, and Umesh Yadav should get a game in the final playing 11. Between, Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane, Shaw seems more potent to play as an opener.
