0-1. Yes, that’s a very common sight in Team India’s away tour journey in a Test series. Team India have once again begun an Away Test series tour with a loss against England in the 1st Test match. It was a closely fought battle between both teams, but England were a better team during the five days. It’s still a long Test series with a total of 5 matches to be played, but beginning a tour with a loss will certainly dent the confidence of the Indian team. 

However, one can say Team India had a decent start to this tour. In the first Test match, the pace trio of Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj were ineffective in both – taking wickets and containing the runs. With such ineffectiveness, India will have a hard time if the same bowling is repeated. On top of this, Shardul, who was played as a bowling all-rounder, hardly bowled in the match. So, if you are not planning to bowl him, there is no reason why India should play him. India will be better off playing Arshdeep Singh as a Frontline pacer in place of Shardul Thakur for the 2nd Test match.

Aside from this change, India should continue with Siraj and Prasidh by giving them one more opportunity. Both pacers may have been ineffective, but should be given one more opportunity. However, India will be more concerned about Jasprit Bumrah’s availability. Gambhir has said that the Team will take a decision on Bumrah’s availability on the match day itself. Since India got a sufficient gap between the 1st and 2nd Test, Bumrah should ideally play this match.
