India vs New Zealand 2022: 1st ODI Predicted Playing 11 for Both

Shikhar Dhawan returns as Captain as we look at the strongest predicted playing 11 for the 2022 Team India vs New Zealand ODI series.

After the aftermath of T20 World Cup 2022, Team India are currently on their tour to New Zealand. The land known for its pure swing bowling shall witness the 3-match T20I and ODI series under a completely revamped squad and leadership. While Hardik is leading the T20I side, Shikhar Dhawan shall lead the ODI side.

The ODI series vs New Zealand marks the first step toward the preparation for the 2023 ODI World Cup. With less than a year to go before the ODI World Cup, India would spend the initial few months testing its bench strength by trying as many players as possible. With the squad missing the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah, new talented players shall be in focus.

Overall, looking at India vs New Zealand ODI stats, India have been a better team. Both teams have played 110 ODIs against each other. While India have won 55 ODIs, New Zealand have won 49 ODIs. Out of the remaining 6 ODIs, 1 has been tied and 5 have been ended as a no result.

The 3-match ODI series begins on November 25th with the second and third ODI being played on November 27th and November 30th. So, with the available lot, what could be the strongest playing for the 2022 India vs New Zealand ODI series.

India vs New Zealand 2022: Official ODI Series Squad for Team India

Batters: Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill & Suryakumar Yadav

Wks: Rishabh Pant & Sanju Samson

All-rounders: Deepak Hooda, Shahbaz Ahmed & Washington Sundar

Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik & Yuzvendra Chahal

Captain: Shikhar Dhawan // Vice-captain: Rishabh Pant

Team India’s Playing 11

Batters

We saw the left-handed duo of Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant opening together in the T20I series. This was the first time India saw TWO left-handed openers in T20I after 2012 when Gautam Gambhir and Irfan Pathan opened together. But for the ODI series, Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill should be back in action as the first-choice openers.

Shikhar Dhawan and Shhubman Gill have done exceptionally well in the recently concluded ODI series. In the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, Shubman Gill is making a strong case to push his name as an opener for the final 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup.

Coming to the middle-order, India should have Shreyas Iyer at 3, Suryakumar Yadav at 4, and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant at 5. Even as Sanju Samson deserves a spot, he will, unfortunately, have to sit out with Deepak Hooda playing at 6 as the finisher all-rounder.

Bowlers

From the bowlers’ point of view, India would play a combination of 4 Frontline bowlers and 2 all-rounders. The pace bowling shall be led by Deepak Chahar with good support from Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik. If the bowling line-up is as predicted, we should see the debut of Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik in the ODI series.

Yuzvendra Chahal shall lead the spin bowling duties for Team India with all-rounder Washington Sundar being the second spinner. Apart from these five, Deepak Hooda can also roll his arm over as the sixth bowler. If required, India can also look to play Shardul Thakur for Umran Malik. But India should give more opportunities to the youngster.

India vs New Zealand 2022 – 1st ODI Predicted Playing 11 for Team India:

Shikhar Dhawan (c), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik & Yuzvendra Chahal

New Zealand’s playing 11 for the ODI seems mostly inspired by the T20 series squad; except for one change. With Ish Sodhi not there in the ODI squad, New Zealand would look to strengthen their batting by bringing in Tom Latham in the middle-order. He should also donn the wicket-keeping duties for New Zealand.

India vs New Zealand 2022 – 1st ODI Predicted Playing 11 for New Zealand:

Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson (c), Tom Latham (wk), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson & Adam Milne

So, that’s about the strongest predicted playing 11 for the 2022 India vs New Zealand ODI series. India would be hoping to kick-start their ODI World Cup campaign with a good series win vs New Zealand.
