IPL 2019: Bowling Performance Report Card for First Half

Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir among the top players who impressed the most as we find the bowling performance report card for the first half of IPL 2019.

IPL 2019 saw not only some fantastic batting display but also some brilliant and economical bowling efforts from the bowlers.

Alzarri Joseph’s unbelievable 6-fer on debut, Sam Curran’s brilliant hat-trick, Kagiso Rabada’s wicket-taking abilities were some of the key bowling highlights from IPL 2019 so far.

While there have been many awesome individual performances, how did the bowlers perform.? Let’s find out in our detailed bowling performance report card from the first half of IPL 2019.

METHODOLOGY:

We have analyzed the bowling performances basis the bowling points considered from the overall aspect of the game such as wickets taken, economy rate bonus, maidens bowled, dot balls, consistency and the man of the match points.

To leave out the biases and perceptions, we have kept things simple by comparing the overall performance rating of all the bowlers to find out the top bowlers from the first half of IPL 2019.

Right then, let’s look at the top bowling performance report card for the first half of IPL 2019.


#5: IMRAN TAHIR

7 Mat | 7 Inns | 9 Wickets | 16.22 Avg. | 5.61 Eco.

Bowling Points: 642 | Performance Rating: 7.34

One of the top three bowlers from the CSK bowling line-up, Imran Tahir has been a go-to man for MS Dhoni in the middle overs.

Be it a pitch offering some spin or be it a pitch with no spin, Imran Tahir’s bowling has been fantastic in both of them. That shows in his performance as he has taken a total of 9 wickets from 7 innings at an average of 16.22 and a brilliant economy rate of 5.61.

His match-winning spell of 3-9 against the RCB in the first match has been the key highlight of his bowling performance.

For his economical spell and wicket-taking abilities, Imran Tahir gets a performance rating of 7.34 with a total of 642 bowling points.  


#4: SHREYAS GOPAL

7 Mat | 5 Inns | 8 Wickets | 19.25 Avg. | 6.42 Eco.

Bowling Points: 557 | Performance Rating: 7.43

A go-to man on turning pitches, Shreyas Gopal has troubled even the best in the business. Be it Virat Kohli or AB de Villiers.

His spell of 3-12 against the RCB was one of the best spells of the tournament, where he got rid of Virat Kohli,  AB de Villiers and Shimron Hetmyer.

Overall, Shreyas Gopal has taken a total of 7 wickets from 5 innings at an average of 19.25 and an economy rate of 6.42

The young and promising, Shreyas Gopal gets a performance rating of 7.43 with a total of 557 bowling points.  


#3: DEEPAK CHAHAR

7 Mat | 7 Inns | 10 Wickets | 17 Avg. | 6.29 Eco.

Bowling Points: 685  | Performance Rating: 7.83

Second, on the list of CSK’s best bowlers and third on the list of leading wicket-takers, Deepak Chahar has a phenomenal IPL 2019 so far.

Keeping things tight in the Power play, thus accounting for wickets has been his forte. In the 7 innings he has played, he has had 6 superb bowling spells including a match-winning 3-20 against the KKR.

Overall, Deepak Chahar has taken a total of 10 wickets from 7 innings at an average of 16.2 and an economy rate of 6.29.

For his tight bowling, Deepak Chahar gets a performance rating of 7.83 with a total of 685 bowling points.  


#2: MOHAMMAD NABI

4 Mat | 4 Inns | 7 Wickets | 12.42 Avg. | 5.49 Eco.

Bowling Points: 396 | Performance Rating: 7.92

Came in as the replacement for Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Nabi has been the best bowler for SRH this season. So much so that even Rashid Khan’s performance looked lukewarm in front of him. 

His spell of 4-11 against the RCB where he got rid of  Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers is easily one of the best bowling spells of the tournament.

In the 4 matches he played, Nabi took 7 wickets at 12.42 and an economy rate of 5.49.

For his superb bowling in the power play, Nabi gets a performance rating of 7.92 with a total of 396 bowling points.

#1: HARBHAJAN SINGH

4 Mat | 4 Inns | 7 Wickets | 11.71 Avg. | 5.12 Eco.

Bowling Points: 507 | Performance Rating: 10

With two player-of-the-match performances, Harbhajan Singh has been the best bowler from the first half of IPL 2019.

It is hard to replace experience as Harbhajan Singh brought all his experience in the game. Three of his superb spells read 3-20, 2-17 and 2-15 as all the spells resulted in a win.

Harbhajan Singh was used as a ‘horses for courses’ approach by MS Dhoni, and it paid the dividend. In the 4 matches he played, he took 7 wickets at 11.71 and an economy rate of 5.12. His economy rate of 5.12 is the best this season. 

Overall, Harbhajan Singh gets a performance rating of 10 with a total of 507 bowling points.  

Kagiso Rabada and Yuzvendra Chahal too have been fantastic being the leading 2 wicket-takers in the tournament. However, Rabada’s economy rate was slightly on the higher side, while Chahal’s was marginally higher than the top 5 bowlers.

Rashid Khan, Alzarri Joseph, and Ravindra Jadeja formed the top 10 bowlers from the first half of IPL 2019.
