One of the only few Teams to have the much-coveted IPL Trophy to their name, the Sunrisers Hyderabad have had a few rough years since their last tournament victory way back in 2016. It was the time Captain David Warner was at its peak, and Rashid Khan was a prime member of the SRH team. But come to 2024, none of SRH’s core players are with them. 

It’s a completely revamped squad for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are currently in a transition phase under the leadership of Aiden Markram. Unlike the last few years, the current SRH squad is full of potential. Be it the Indian core of Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, etc., or be it the Overseas core of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, or Pat Cummins. These are some solid names on the table for SRH. 

However, as has been the case in 2023 as well, SRH’s main headache shall be IPL performance. All these players are full of quality. But when it comes to IPL performance or experience, they are lacking that big time as compared to other teams. Having said that, the first-choice playing 11 for SRH for IPL 2024 looks solid, and we will explore that in this article.

Openers – Travis Head & Mayank Agarwal 

When we were in 2023, Abhishek Sharma and Mayank Agarwal opened for SRH for most of the matches. But with the addition of Travis Head, the opening combination is bound to change for SRH. Travis is a much more potent batter, and with him opening, Mayank Agarwal seems to be the front-runner at the moment to support him. 

Middle-order – Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram & Heinrich Klaasen (wk)

Coming to middle-order, Rahul Tripathi should continue to play at number for SRH. With Rahul at 3, the number 4 and number 5 are solid players in the form of Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen. This is a solid top 5, but only if all these players play to their full potential, and bring out their best on the field. 

All-rounders – Abhishek Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed & Washington Sundar

Coming to finisher all-rounders, SRH once again have good quality in the form of Abhishek Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Washington Sundar. While these three seem to have priority, SRH may also think of playing Abdul Samad in place of Abhishek Sharma or Shahbaz Ahmed depending on the match. 

Bowlers – Pat Cummins, Bhuvneshwar Kumar & T Natarajan

Talking about the bowling lineup for SRH, the team will see a great bowling all-rounder in the form of Pat Cummins. SRH spent a fortune on Cummins, and he will definitely play a crucial role in 2024. In addition, SRH will depend on their fast bowling duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan. The team can also utilize Umran Malik depending on the pitch.

Talking about the Impact player for SRH while bowling first, Mayank Markande will come in the side in place of Rahul Tripathi or Mayank Agarwal. Markande has had a great IPL 2023, and it is only fair to give him priority in the playing 11. With Markande or even Umran Malik in the side, SRH have as many as seven bowling options to explore.

SRH Playing 11 2024 Alternate Options:

#1: Abdul Samad for Abhishek Sharma / Shahbaz Ahmed

Given SRH’s top-order heavy batting lineup, Abhishek Sharma may not get opportunities at the top, unless Mayank Agarwal is out of form or Travis Head is unavailable. Unfortunately, he isn’t much of a finisher either. In that case, SRH may think of playing a hard-hitter Abdul Samad in place of either Abhishek Sharma or Shahbaz Ahmed

#2: Umran Malik for Mayank Markande or Shahbaz Ahmed

The SRH team is filled with a quality Indian bowling lineup. In that case, a quality bowler like Umran Malik will get opportunities sooner or later. With spinners like Wasghinton Sundar, Travis Head, Aiden Markram, and Mayank Markande already present, Umran Malik can get an opportunity in place of one of these to strengthen the pace bowling. 

#3: Good Overseas Backups

SRH have overseas players in plenty with backups for almost all of them. While Marco Jansen can come in as a backup for Pat Cummins, Glenn Phillips can come in as a backup for Heinrich Klaasen. Similarly, SRH have Fazalhaq Farooqi and Wanindu Hasaranga as and when needed.
