T20 WC 2026 Team India vs New Zealand Best Playing 11 and Final Preview

With Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy under scanner, explore the best playing 11 comparison for Team India vs New Zealand in the Final clash of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Imagine a situation where you have the number 1 T20I batter and number 1 T20I bowler with you, and you reach the final of a T20 World Cup, without much contribution from both of these players. Yes, we are talking about Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy. While Abhishek has been poor throughout the tournament, Varun was good in the group stage, bowling good lengths, but lost his lengths in the Super 8 onwards, and has been poor since then.

But the good and the biggest positive for the Indian team is that they are still in the final, without much contribution from these two. So, if any, both are due for a good outing, and what better moment than the World Cup final? But will India still persist with both of them, or make a change or two in the playing 11? Well, ideally, India would like to keep the winning momentum, as making changes now, especially for two of the best players over the last two years, can be looked at as a negative.

New Zealand, on the other hand, would also like to keep their winning momentum in place, and should ideally stick to the same playing 11 as they played against South Africa. At worst, they may think of bringing an extra pacer for James Neesham, but that should slightly weaken their batting, which will be a key against a strong Indian bowling attack. New Zealand have a lot of All-rounders in the team, and that kind gives them the strength to play an aggressive brand of cricket.

Key Match Details

Tournament Details: T20 World Cup 2026

Match Details: India vs New Zealand Grand Final

Where: Ahmedabad, India

When: March 08, 7 pm IST

Pitch Expectations: The Ahmedabad pitch, in general, has two faces to it. If played on black soil as they did in the 2023 World Cup final, we may see a low-scoring final. But if played on red soil, we can probably see the flattest wicket, as the one we saw in Wankhede. The expectation is that red soil could come into play in Ahmedabad, and we may see a high-scoring contest in the final. Albeit, the pressure of the event may still make it a low-scoring contest.

Observing the squads of both teams, it will be a game of match-ups. So, as we had seen in the previous few matches, it will be the off-spin of Cole McConchie and Glenn Phillips vs Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. The struggles of Indian left-handers against off-spinners is a well-known fact, so New Zealand won’t hesitate to start with Cole McConchie alongside Matt Henry. It will once again boil down to how temperamentally strong you are to tackle the off-spinners.

Given that New Zealand have two left-arm spinners in the team, Shivam Dube’s role in the middle-overs will once again be a key. So, expect Dube to once again bat above Hardik and SKY, if needed. Since New Zealand may not play a good third pacer, they will have to use James Neesham’s overs wisely. India would ideally like to target the overs of Neesham and Rachin so that they can plan the overs of Henry, Ferguson, and Santner accordingly.

Finn Allen and Tim Seifert vs Jasprit Bumrah

Another big battle shall be between the Indian pacers and New Zealand’s fiery top-order. If the pitch assists any seam movement, Arshdeep, Hardik, and Bumrah can be extremely lethal against two blistering openers. If New Zealand are able to get past them, Chakravarthy may be under even more pressure to deliver. These battles will make the Sunday’s final clash one of the most exciting clashes on offer in this World Cup.

Another interesting observation is the batting depth of New Zealand. New Zealand bat deep till 9, which makes their batting extremely strong. So, if at all, a flat pitch is on offer, New Zealand can play with much freedom. India, on the other hand, would want Abhishek and Kishan to give more than 100% to be able to have a solid grip on the match. Also hoping Varun Chakravarthy forgets the past demons and gives a career-best performance in the final.

One thing India and Suryakumar Yadav should do is not expose Varun Chakravarthy in the powerplay. Given Varun’s horrible mix-up with lengths throughout the Super 8 matches, a slight error in length may once again punish Chakravarthy. So, if any, it should be Axar bowling against two right-handers in the powerplay instead of Varun Chakravarthy. Varun needs the cushion of fielders on the boundary to be able to bowl with much freedom. So, unless he loses his confidence in the Powerplay, he can be a lethal bowler.
