IPL 2027 Mumbai Indians (MI) Retained Squad Best Players List

With 18 probable names expected, explore the best retained squad and released players list for the Mumbai Indians (MI) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027.

There was a time when the Mumbai Indians were invincible in the Indian Premier League. There was also a time when the Mumbai Indians used to make a comeback, and go on to win the title after losing the first 4-5 matches. But all that is history, and the Mumbai Indians’ DNA seems to have changed as once an invincible side with a winning attitude has now failed to qualify for the IPL 2026 Playoffs, forget winning the tournament.

It has been another year to forget for the Mumbai Indians, who are yet to win a trophy since their last triumph in 2020. Last year, MI did play the eliminator, but this season has been a complete drawdown for them. With just 4 points from 9 games, their season is done and dusted, as 99% of the time, you won’t be able to qualify at 14 points. So, the best MI can now do is play for pride, and focus on the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

The current edition has already given MI so many players, who just don’t fit in the DNA of the team. The management needs to be sacked first, and Mahela Jayawardene should be the first name on the list to be released. But what about the players? Well, let’s analyze the current Mumbai Indians’ squad, and look at the best retained and released players list for MI for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027.

IPL 2027 Mumbai Indians (MI) Retained Squad Explained

Let’s start with the batters that the Mumbai Indians shall retain, and who they will release. Among potential retentions are Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Sherfane Rutherford. These four are the core players of the Mumbai Indians, and even if SKY and Tilak are struggling for form, these two are unlikely to be released, unless SKY or Tilak demand it specifically. Aside from these two batters, the Mumbai Indians may look to release Danish Melawar, who doesn’t look fit for this format, and didn’t look impressive either in the limited opportunities he got.

Coming to wicket-keepers, I think the time has come for the Mumbai Indians to finally move from Quinton de Kock and let Ryan Rickelton be the primary wicket-keeper for the coming years. Rickelton has proved himself in both years so far, and unless the Mumbai Indians are high on something, there is no reason to play someone else other than Rickelton as the keeper-batter. So, expect the Mumbai Indians to retain Ryan Rickelton and Robin Minz, and release Quinton de Kock.

IPL 2027 Mumbai Indians (MI) Released Players Best List

  1. Danish Melawar
  2. Quinton de Kock (OS)
  3. Deepak Chahar
  4. Shardul Thakur
  5. Trent Boult (OS)
  6. Mayank Markande
  7. Mayank Rawat
  8. Raj Bawa
  9. Keshav Maharaj (OS)

Coming to All-rounders, the Mumbai Indians have them in plenty. Right from the best in the business, and their Captain Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians shall retain the likes of Mitchell Santner, Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, Corbin Bosch, and emerging ones like Krish Bhagwat and Atharva Ankolekar. With so many quality All-rounders already available, expect the Mumbai Indians to release Raj Bawa, who has been completely ignored in IPL 2026.

Bowling is the area where we can see many releases from the Mumbai Indians team. Among the three big releases, we should see Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Shardul Thakur. All three pacers seem to be off their prime, and are almost in the final stages of their career. It would not be prudent for the Mumbai Indians to retain them at such expensive prices. Aside from these three, temporary Keshav Maharaj could also be released.

In terms of retentions, the Mumbai Indians don’t have many big names. Jasprit Bumrah is the only experienced bowler in the side from a retention point of view. Aside from him, the Mumbai Indians could retain young guns like Raghu Sharma, Ashwani Kumar, Allah Ghazanfar, and Mohammad Izhar. Ghazanfar did well for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, and that should prompt MI to retain him in IPL 2027 too.

So, that’s about the best retained and released players list for the Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2027. Overall, MI should retain 18 players, and if they do that, they should roughly have around 30 Cr for the upcoming edition of the IPL. This should be good enough for them to strengthen their bowling, which is their main pain point. They definitely need two solid Overseas pacers, and a couple of good trades should get them going for next year.
