IPL 2024: The Biggest Flop Players 11 of the Tournament

Glenn Maxwell to lead the team with 3 CSK players as we look at the flop players 11 of the season for IPL 2024.

2 months!! That’s the approximate duration the IPL 2024 has been actively running, and we are still not done yet. The tournament has concluded the group stage matches with 3 wash-outs in it. Looking at the standing, we have KKR, SRH, RR, and RCB as the top 4 teams for Playoffs, and they will now be battling it out for 4 more matches in the Playoffs.

It has been a complete turnaround for not just the Royal Challengers Bengaluru but also the IPL in terms of Playoffs Standings. While CSK, GT, MI, and LSG made it to the Playoffs in 2023, none of these teams were able to qualify for Playoffs this year. The biggest turnaround has been from SRH, who were in 10th position in 2023, but finished in the top 2 in 2024.

While we have seen some really stunning performances from players, and especially batters this season, we still have a lot of players, who despite having all the resources and talent with them, failed to make any impression during the tournament. So, who are these players? Well, let’s look at the biggest flop players 11 of the season for IPL 2024.

To find out the flop players of the season, we shall look at the performance of players who have played at least 6 matches. Please note, we at AK4TSay1 Cricalytics fully respect the players, and the intention behind this article is to highlight the shocking performance these players have despite being one of the best in the business.

The Biggest Flop 11 of IPL 2024

Openers – Devdutt Padikkal & Wriddhiman Saha

Starting with the openers, we have Devdutt Padikkal from LSG and Wriddhiman Saha from GT. It has been a season to forget for both these players, and especially Padikkal. Only recently did Padikkal make a good debut for Team India in Test matches. But somehow, it looked as if a different Padikkal appeared in IPL 2024. In 7 matches, Padikkal could only manage 38 runs with a highest score of just 13. What’s more, Padikkal’s average stood at 5.4 and strike rate at 71.7

Partnering Devdutt at the top, Wriddhiman Saha couldn’t replicate his 2022 and 2023 form that he had with Gujarat Titans. It felt as if Saha ran out of fuel, and had no answers to questions being thrown at him in IPL 2024. In the 9 matches that Saha played, he could only manage 136 runs with a highest score of 39. With not a single 50+ score, Saha had an average of 15.1 and a strike rate of 118.3

Middle-order – Ajinkya Rahane, Deepak Hooda & Vijay Shankar

Coming to the middle-order, we have Vijay Shankar as the worst middle-order batter with Ajinkya Rahane and Deepak Hooda not far behind. In terms of stats, Shankar could only manage 83 runs from 7 matches. Match after match, GT kept on playing Vijay Shankar, but not once did he prove GT’s decision right, and that badly hurt them.

Similar case to that of Vijay Shankar, Chennai Super Kings kept on playing Ajinkya Rahane match after match as Rahane felt in no mood to score runs. Rahane played for 12 innings, but could only manage 242 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 123.5. Not once did he manage to go past 50, which reflects his misery.

Apart from Rahane and Shankar, Deepak Hooda wasn’t far behind with respect to his contributions to the team. Batting in the top-order, Hooda could only manage to score 145 runs from 11 matches at an average of 18.1 and a strike rate of 138. Hooda crossed 50+ once, but failed in all the other innings that he had in mind.

Finishers – Glenn Maxwell & Jitesh Sharma

Talking to the finishers, look no beyond Glenn Maxwell and Jitesh Sharma. Of course, Maxwell still has a chance to redeem himself in the Playoffs, but up until the Group stage, Maxwell has been a disappointment. Maxwell could only manage 52 runs from 9 matches at a pathetic average of 6.5. While Maxwell did take 6 wickets, his primary role was batting, and he failed miserably in that.

At number 7, we have Jitesh Sharma, who had a tournament to forget after being one of the leading contenders for Team India’s wicket-keeper slot. Jitesh could only manage 187 runs from 12 innings at a poor average of 17. He had the highest score of 32, which he managed to score as a Captain in the last group stage match as Captain.

Bowlers – Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar & Anrich Nortje

Coming to bowlers, we have Ravichandran Ashwin as the least-performing spinner of the season. Ashwin played all matches for RR, but could only manage 7 wickets at a horrible average of 57.9 and a decent economy rate of 8.6. Only once did Ash take a 3-wicket haul, and that was it from him. Hopefully, Ashwin comes good in the Playoffs, and gives RR something to cheer for.

Talking about the worst pacers of the season, we have the CSK duo of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur alongside Anrich Nortje from Delhi Capitals. It’s surprising to see two CSK pacers on the list, but honestly, both were unimpressive. While Deepak took 5 wickets from 8 matches, Shardul took it further with 5 wickets from 9 matches. While Deepak had an average of 41, Shardul was worst at 65.

Anrich Nortje could well be the worst-performing pacer of the season. Having played 6 matches, Delhi trusted Nortje to come good at least once. But Nortje looked in no mood to stop, and his shocking economy rate of 13.4 is the reason for that. Overall, Nortje did get wickets with 7 from 6 matches, but the economy rate and average are the reasons why he is on this list.

IPL 2024 Flop Players 11 of the Season

  1. Devdutt Padikkal
  2. Wriddhiman Saha (wk)
  3. Ajinkya Rahane
  4. Deepak Hooda
  5. Vijay Shankar
  6. Glenn Maxwell (c)
  7. Jitesh Sharma
  8. Ravichandran Ashwin
  9. Shardul Thakur
  10. Deepak Chahar
  11. Anrich Nortje

So, that’s about the biggest flop 11 of the season for IPL 2024. It’s unfortunate to see so many quality players having a horror time this IPL. While most of these players aren’t featuring in the Playoffs, the likes of Maxwell and Ashwin can still improve their miserable record by making a memorable comeback in the IPL 2024 Playoffs.
