Sep 9!! Yes, the much-awaited and most controversial Asia Cup 2025 is going to kick-start from September 9 with 8 Teams set to be a part of Asia’s prolific cricket tournament. Since this is a prelude to the T20 World Cup 2026, the Asia Cup will be played in T20 format, unlike the previous tournament, which was played in ODI format as a prelude to the ODI World Cup 2023.
Amidst all the controversy regarding India’s participation in the tournament, in lieu of the Pahalgam attack by the terrorist organization, the Asian Cricket Council has still gone ahead, and released the schedule, with both India and Pakistan expected to feature in the tournament. The Asia Cup 2025 shall begin on September 9 with the Final to be played on September 28, thus a total of 19 days for the tournament.
The blockbuster India vs Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, Sunday. This shall be a Group stage match. Post this match, the teams will once again meet on September 21 for a Super 4 clash. And if things go well, we might once again see an India vs Pakistan clash on September 28 in the final. If it happens, it will be a proper 3-match series between India and Pakistan. While the dates are fixed, the venues for the clashes aren’t fixed. However, the venues should most likely be UAE.
Asia Cup 2025 Format Explained
Talking about the format of the Asia Cup 2025, the tournament shall be played in T20 format as a prelude to the T20 World Cup 2026. 8 Teams shall be participating in the tournament, and these 8 teams are divided into two groups. While India, Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE are placed in Group A, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong are placed in Group B. Each team will play the other three teams in the group once, thus a total of 12 group stage matches in both groups combined.
The top 2 teams from each group will then proceed to the Super 4 stage. The Super 4 stage is an upgraded version of the group stage, with each team playing the other three teams once. Based on the Standings, the top 2 teams will then proceed to play the grand final on September 28. In between, India and Pakistan are expected to clash in the Super 4 stage on September 21.
While the schedule has been officially released, it remains to be seen if India actually ends up playing in the tournament. The Indian Government has already given a red signal to the BCCI, but since the BCCI is a private body, the Indian government has no control over the participation of the Indian team. For now, BCCI hasn’t made any official comment, which means there is a green signal. But the sentiments can change quickly, and BCCI, being the most powerful cricket body, can change the dynamics of the tournament completely.
Asia Cup 2025 India’s Expected Squad
Meanwhile, talking about India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, it has not been declared officially yet. Team India will be without the star players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In Rohit’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav shall lead the team. The team is also likely to see Jasprit Bumrah leading the bowling attack with stars like Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, etc., likely to feature in the tournament.
