Ravindra Jadeja, the most unfortunate as we look at the unlucky players 11 for Team India that will miss the T20 World Cup 2022.
When BCCI announced the official squad for Team India for T20 World Cup 2022, the selection felt on the spot. Unlike Asia Cup 2022 where India selected only 3 pacers, BCCI amended that in T20 World Cup 2022 by selecting 4 pacers. The choice of batters felt good too. However, there were a few minor areas which didn’t feel completely right.
Even as Team India selected a superb bunch of players, there were many potential candidates, who otherwise would make up for a B team. There were many other players who performed their heart out in the limited opportunities they got while playing in Domestic, IPL or International. But with a restriction of 15 players, it’s quite unfortunate these players had to miss out.
So, in this article, we take a look at 11 such Team India players who could consider themselves unlucky to have missed out on the T20 World Cup 2022 squad. The criteria to select these players would be basis their potential and performance over the last 1 year or so. Alright then, let’s get to it
Unlucky Players 11 for T20 World Cup 2022
ODI and IPL Specialists Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill
If we talk about two solid openers who otherwise have been playing regularly in ODIs as Team India openers, but have missed out from the T20 World Cup 2022 squad, it is Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill. Both have been playing ODI cricket regularly, but aren’t in contention for T20Is as yet.
Not that they aren’t good T20 players. They have been performing really well in the Domestic circuit. Even If we look at their IPL record, it is astonishing in the last couple of years. It’s unfortunate they had to miss out from the squad because we have two solid openers, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul
Backup Trio of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer
It’s been a year or more, and Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Shreyas Iyer have been playing regular T20I cricket in the absence of the senior players. And mind you, they have done well. But another unfortunate circumstance where Team India have considered senior players in place of them, and leaving these three in the Backup category.
Unlucky Ravindra Jadeja
Of these 11 players, if there’s one name who would have made it to the final 15 players if he was not injured, it is Ravindra Jadeja. The unfortunate knee injury ruled Ravindra Jadeja out of T20 World Cup 2022; thus giving an opportunity to like-for-like replacement Axar Patel. It would be a big loss for the Indian team as the 3D capabilities of Ravindra Jadeja are unmatched.
Again, if there’s one name who should have been in the final 15, but missed out of the squad as India needed an off-spinner, it is Ravi Bishnoi. Bishnoi, who has the best strike rate (14.5) as a bowler for Team India in T20Is since Jan 2021 could have been an x-factor in T20 World Cup 2022. His unusual action and control on line were his differentiators. But another unfortunate situation as the BCCI chose the experience of Ravichandran Ashwin above Ravi Bishnoi.
Coming to the Backup pacers options, Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami are already in the reserves. If anything goes wrong, these two would be the first names to consider for the selection. But for now, Shami and Chahar can consider themselves unlucky to have missed out on the official squad for T20 World Cup 2022.
Apart from these two, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj can also consider themselves unlucky to have missed out on the squad. While Shardul is a brilliant middle overs and death Overs bowler, Siraj has had good success in Australia. With that experience, these two could have been handy pacers in Australia.
Team India Unlucky Players 11 that will Miss T20 World Cup 2022:
Shikhar Dhawan (C), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (WK), Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi & Mohammed Siraj
So, that’s about it for the unlucky 11 for Team India for T20 World Cup 2022. Apart from the above-mentioned 11 names, the likes of Washington Sundar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Avesh Khan, Umran Malik, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav were in contention too for T20 World Cup 2022.
