IPL 2023: All 10 Teams Updated Playoffs Qualification Scenario
Delhi Capitals eliminated, while Gujarat Titans almost qualify as we look at the playoffs qualification scenario for all 10 teams for IPL 2023.
The IPL 2023 is currently at the business end of the tournament, and this has got to be the most competitive tournament in the history of IPL. Such has been the quality of the tournament so far that at the end of Match 55, only one team has been eliminated, and all other nine teams are standing tall in the Playoffs race.
Gujarat Titans are currently leading the points table with 16 points to their name. They are followed by CSK with 15 points and LSG with 11 points. Whereas Delhi Capitals are in tenth position with 8 points from 11 games. While GT looks to be almost qualified, and just need a win to have a Q beside their name, Delhi Capitals are now out due to their loss against CSK.
So, with 15 group stage matches left, how about we analyze all the pending matches, and look at the Playoffs qualification scenario of all 10 teams for IPL 2023? To simplify the analysis, we shall look at the current situation in terms of points earned, and then analyze the pending fixtures to arrive at the qualification scenario.
#1: Chennai Super Kings
M: 11 // PTS: 15 // NRR: +0.493
Next matches: KKR (H) & DC (A)
Chennai Super Kings are well placed in the second position with 15 points from 11 games. They now have a home game vs KKR and an away game vs DC. DC and KKR are currently strangling at the bottom half of the points table. With a home game left, expect CSK to sail through with at least a win from their remaining two games.
Qualification Meter: Positive
#2: Delhi Capitals
M: 11 // PTS: 8 // NRR: -0.605
Next matches: CSK (H) & PBKS (H&A)
A loss against Chennai Super Kings means Delhi Capitals are now out of IPL 2023. They can at max get to 14 points, and given the competitive nature of this year’s tournament, it looks impossible for them to qualify.
Qualification Meter: Eliminated
#3: Gujarat Titans
M: 11 // PTS: 16 // NRR: +0.951
Next matches: MI (A), SRH (H) & RCB (A)
Gujarat Titans have repeated their last year’s performance with stunning 16 points from 11 games. GT haven’t qualified as yet, but as the history has seen, no team has ever failed to qualify with 16 points. Mathematically, they can still not qualify as six or more teams can finish at 16 or more points. But if they even win one more game, GT would qualify without any scenario in the picture.
Qualification Meter: Positive
#4: Kolkata Knight Riders
M: 11 // PTS: 10 // NRR: -0.079
Next matches: RR (H), CSK (A) & LSG (H)
A win against Punjab Kings in the last game has kept the Playoffs hope alive for KKR in IPL 2023. They currently are riding high with three wins in their last five matches. With 10 points from 11 games, KKR need to win all their remaining three matches to qualify for the Playoffs. However, the road ahead doesn’t seem to be easy with three difficult fixtures in the form of RR, CSK, and LSG. It would be interesting if KKR make it to the top 4, but that looks difficult for now.
Qualification Meter: Negative
#5: Lucknow Super Giants
M: 11 // PTS: 11 // NRR: +0.294
Next matches: SRH (A), MI (H) & KKR (A)
Lucknow Super Giants are currently placed third with 11 points from 11 games. However, their qualification scenario looks tentative. They would definitely have to win all three games to have a confirmed shot at the Playoffs. But in case they lose one, that shouldn’t be against MI, and they would also have to hope, two of RR, PBKS, and RCB don’t end up at 16 points.
Qualification Meter: Neutral
#6: Mumbai Indians
M: 11 // PTS: 12 // NRR: -0.255
Next matches: GT (H), LSG (A) & SRH (H)
A crucial win over RCB places Mumbai Indians in third position with 12 points from 11 games. They are now better off than most of the bottom-ranked teams. All they got to do is win all three matches vs GT, LSG, and SRH for a confirmed scenario without any P&C. If they win two, they just have to hope their NRR is better than that of the fourth-ranked team at the least. Also, they got to make sure, they don’t lose against LSG.
Qualification Meter: Positive
#7: Punjab Kings
M: 11 // PTS: 10 // NRR: -0.441
Next matches: DC (A), DC (H) & RR (H)
A loss against KKR in the last game has dented the chances of the Punjab Kings for the Playoffs of IPL 2023. They are now at 10 points from 11 games, and the road ahead doesn’t seem to be promising for Punjab Kings. Undoubtedly, they need to win all three matches to qualify for the Playoffs. With two matches against DC and one against RR, they can still do it, but it would be a difficult task.
Qualification Meter: Neutral
#8: Rajasthan Royals
M: 11 // PTS: 10 // NRR: +0.388
Next matches: KKR (A), RCB (H) & PBKS (A)
Rajasthan Royals would be ruing themselves for having to have lost such a critical encounter against SRH. They now are placed in fourth position with 10 points from 11 games. Their upcoming matches are all tough fixtures. Needless to say, they need to win all three matches to be in contention for Playoffs. However, this looks unlikely now with two difficult away fixtures against KKR and PBKS.
Qualification Meter: Neutral
#9: Royal Challengers Bangalore
M: 11 // PTS: 10 // NRR: -0.345
Next matches: RR (A), SRH (A) & GT (H)
A loss against Mumbai Indians places RCB in seventh position with 10 points from 11 games. Looking at their fixtures, they would have to play their best cricket to have a shot at the Playoffs. Needless to say, they will have to win all three with one big margin to keep their NRR positive. If they don’t have a big margin win, they would have to hope their NRR is above the fourth-ranked team at the least.
Qualification Meter: Negative
#10: Sunrisers Hyderabad
M: 10 // PTS: 8 // NRR: -0.472
Next matches: LSG (H), GT (A), RCB (H) & MI (A)
A win against RR have kept the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the hunt for the Playoffs spot. They are currently placed ninth with 8 points from 10 games. They are not out of the tournament as yet, but would have to win all their remaining four games to take them to 16 points. If they lose even one, it should be the end for SRH given their negative NRR.
Qualification Meter: Negative
