IPL 2024: Best Retained Squad for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

Lucknow Super Giants to retain 19 players as we look at the best retained squad and players list for LSG for IPL 2024. 

There are just a few days to go before the deadline for the IPL 2024 Auction retained players list submission, and we have seen the second trade of the season. It’s the same team, Lucknow Super Giants, who have now traded out Pacer Avesh Khan, and traded in a top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal. Given Avesh’s high price and is ineffectiveness as a pacer, this seems to be a good move for LSG.

The Lucknow Super Giants have had two good years in the IPL so far. In both the years that they have played, they have qualified for the Playoffs, albeit with no success beyond that. But even this can be considered a good success given how relatively new the team is. While 2022 had seen KL Rahul as the Captain, in his absence in 2023, Krunal Pandya led the side. 

Coming to player retentions, the Lucknow team shall mostly stick to retaining their core, and releasing only those players who seem less on potential or on high base price. So, how about we analyze the current squad, and look at the strongest retained players list for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction?

Batters – Ayush Badoni, Devdutt Padikkal (T) & KL Rahul (c)

One name that Lucknow Super Giants have added to their batting rooster is Devdutt Padikkal, who may or may not play as an opener, but shall definitely play in the top-order for Lucknow. With Devdutt traded in, Lucknow Super Giants shall mostly retain KL Rahul and Ayush Badoni alongside him. With these three retainees, the ones that LSG shall leave out are Manan Vohra, Karun Nair, and Suryansh Shedge. 

WKs – Nicholas Pooran (o) & Quinton de Kock (o)

Coming to the wicket-keepers, there are only two names in the side, and those are Nicholas Pooran and Quinton de Kock. Without a doubt, these two shall be retained by Lucknow. In addition to these two overseas options, LSG also have KL Rahul as the backup wicket-keeper option. However, LSG will look at a couple of backup WK options from the Auction. 

Spin All-rounders – Deepak Hooda, Karan Sharma, Krishnappa Gowtham & Krunal Pandya

Coming to spin all-rounders, Lucknow may give another chance to Deepak Hooda, who had a horrible IPL 2023. However, with Devdutt added to the squad, it looks unlikely that Deepak will make it to the first-choice playing 11. Other than Deepak, LSG will also retain Vice-captain Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham, and Karan Sharma. However, the team will mostly let go of Swapnil Singh, who didn’t impress much in IPL 2023. 

Pace All-rounders – Kyle Mayers (o), Marcus Stoinis (o), Prerak Mankad & Yudhvir Charak

For the pace all-rounders, LSG have already traded out Romario Shephard, which is actually a smart move. Other than Shephard, LSG will also most probably release Daniel Sams. With these two releases, Lucknow Super Giants will retain the likes of Kyle Mayers, Marcus Stoinis, Prerak Mankad, and Yudhvir Charak. Both Prerak and Yudhvir had a good IPL 2023, and that should be enough to inspire the management to retain them. 

Spinners – Ravi Bishnoi

Coming to the spinners, Lucknow Super Giants currently have Amit Mishra and Ravi Bishnoi in the side. However, of the two, LSG shall mostly retain only Ravi Bishnoi, who will act as the first-choice spinner in the squad. While age and fitness may not be on Amit Mishra’s side, if LSG are actually generous, they could give one more chance to Amit Mishra.

Pacers – Jaydev Unadkat, Mark Wood (o), Mohsin Khan, Naveen Ul-Haq (o) & Yash Thakur

Finally, talking about the pacers, Lucknow Super Giants have plenty of options in the side. From the overseas option, Lucknow will definitely retain Mark Wood and Naveen Ul-Haq; provided Mark Wood doesn’t pull out or ECB pulls him out. Whereas from the Indian option, Avesh Khan is already out, so the ones that LSG shall retain are Jaydev Unadkat, Mohsin Khan, and Yash Thakur.

So, that’s about the strongest retained squad and players list for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction. Overall, expect Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to retain 19 players including 6 overseas pacers. With these retentions, LSG will have around INR 14 Cr for the Auction, which they can use to buy a couple of good players.
