T20 World Cup 2024: Team India Confirmed Squad and Players list

Rohit Sharma to lead as we look at the confirmed squad and players list for Team India for the 2024 T20 World Cup. 

The ICC recently announced the official schedule for the 2024 T20 World Cup, which be played in the US and West Indies. With that, all eyes are now on the Indian camp, and the squad they are likely to select for the T20 World Cup. Only recently did the Indian team complete their final T20 series before the World Cup, and now they have only IPL 2024 to ponder on their selections.

With IPL 2024 now the only base remaining to select the final squad, not much will change even if the IPL 2024 performance is at par or subpar for the players who are in contention. More or less, the Indian management has already finalized their 20-member core, and the final squad of 15 and the additional reserve players will be selected from those only. 

Another rocking news in the Indian camp is the comeback of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Indian camp after a gap of almost 1.5 years. With Hardik and SKY missing, the Indian team recalled Rohit and Virat to the T20 setup, and also made Rohit, the captain of the side. This changes the team dynamics completely as two youngsters will now have to sacrifice their place in the squad. 

Moreover, we know the 2024 T20 World Cup will be played in the US and West Indies. This means, the pitches are mostly going to be on the slower side. Considering that, let’s look at the squad and players list that Team India are most-likely to select for the final showdown at the 2024 T20 World Cup. To simplify the analysis, we will breakdown the squad into different player categories.

T20 World Cup 2024 T20 Squad for Indian Team

Batters

Rinku Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli & Yashasvi Jaiswal

Talking about the first category of players, the batters, there are so many players to choose from. But the ones that are confirmed to be in the final 15 are Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rinku Singh. Without an iota of a doubt, none of these 5 batters will be left out. But apart from these 5, there are 3 more batters who are in contention for the squad. 

Among the additional batters, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, and Tilak Varma have also been playing regular T20I cricket in the last 1-2 years. But with squad limitations to only 15, unfortunately, none of them may get a chance to be in the final 15. however, among the three, Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad may be traveling as reserves. 

WKs

Ishan Kishan & Jitesh Sharma

Coming to the wicket-keepers, there are once again four names to explore, and those are Ishan Kishan, Jitesh Sharma, KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson. There’s huge competition in this aspect, but if there is one name who is certain to play, it is Jitesh Sharma. Jitesh has been more than decent in the limited opportunities he has got so far, and given his role as a finisher, he is the only reasonable option.

But between, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and KL Rahul for the second wicket-keeper slot, there’s deep confusion. While KL Rahul may not be considered as he was not included in the Afghanistan T20 series too, Sanju Samson has been inconsistent with his performance. This leaves us with only Ishan Kishan, who seems a potential second keeper, but given his surprising absence from the team off late, raises questions about his selection. But Kishan looks good for now for the World Cup slot.     

All-rounders

Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya & Ravindra Jadeja

Talking about the all-rounders, we should definitely see Hardik Pandya back with the team if he is fit and available. For the second all-rounder slot, if Jadeja is fit, he should take that slot without any question. For the third all-rounder slot, India have Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Washington Sundar. But of three, Axar Patel’s spin bowling will be suited the most in West Indies. 

Spinners 

Kuldeep Yadav & Ravi Bishnoi

If we talk about the spinners, India are definitely going to go ahead with 2 options. If we observe the current spin attack, India have four options, and those are Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, and Washington Sundar. Of the four, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi seem to be the potential options who have been regular, and have also done well. 

Pacers

Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami & Jasprit Bumrah

Finally, talking about the pacers, India have a big headache to solve. With 12 players already selected, India will have to select only 3 pacers. This seems logical as pitches will be on the slower side, and India also have Hardik as the fourth pacer. For the three pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are sure-shot contenders. This leaves us with only one spot, and India have plenty of options to explore for that slot. 

From the available options for the third pacer, India have Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, and Avesh Khan. But if India had to select only one name, it has got to be the most reliable, Mohammed Shami. Of all the pacers left, Shami has the best performance in the IPL, and is also the most experienced. Hence, if Shami is fit, he will get the opportunity first.

Batters: Rinku Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli & Yashasvi Jaiswal

WKs: Ishan Kishan & Jitesh Sharma

All-rounders: Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya & Ravindra Jadeja

Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah & Ravi Bishnoi

So, that’s about the best squad and players list for India for T20 World Cup 2024. Overall, apart from the 15 names mentioned above, India shall mostly keep Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mukesh Kumar, and Shivam Dube in the reserves. They also have Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma to fall back in case of any injuries. Meanwhile, here are the fixtures for Team India for World Cup 2024.
