West Indies vs India 2022: Official T20 Squad Players list for Team India

Virat Kohli rested as we look at the official squad players list for Team India for the 2022 T20 series vs West Indies.

Update on July 22, 8 pm IST: KL Rahul has tested COVID positive, and has been ruled out of the T20 Series. 

India’s supreme Cricket body, the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) announced the official 18-member squad for Team India for the T20 series vs West Indies. While the squad seems to be on the expected lines, it does have a few surprises. The major ones are the omission of India’s prime duo, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. 

Even as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yuzvendra Chahal are rested, Rohit Sharma continues to lead Team India to make sure the leadership doesn’t have another surprise angle. To recap, Rohit had earlier decided to rest for the not-so-important ODI series vs West Indies, and Dhawan was named as the stand-in captain.  

The 5-match T20 series begins on July 29, just 2 days after the conclusion of the ODI series. While Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal’s rest seems to be understood, Virat Kohli should have played the T20 series at the least. His current form isn’t encouraging, and against a side like West Indies, he could have gained good confidence. 

New Additions / Changes:

The two key players, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav were added to the squad. But unfortunately, KL Rahul has tested COVID positive, and has been ruled out. Apart from these two, Ravichandran Ashwin makes a surprising comeback to the squad. It would be interesting to see how he fits into the setup now. 

From the full-strength squad that played against England, Umran Malik has been left out to accommodate an extra pacer. In addition, the likes of Sanju Samson, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who were a part of the Ireland tour continue to miss. Whereas Mohammed Shami also remains out of India’s plan for T20Is. 

Overall, the T20 squad seems to be quite potent with the right mix of Pacers, All-rounders, batters, and spinners. However, Virat Kohli’s absence will hurt Kohli more than India. Nevertheless, here’s the official squad for Team India for the 2022 T20 Series vs West Indies.

Wks: Dinesh Karthik, Ishan Kishan & Rishabh Pant

All-rounders: Axar Patel, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya & Ravindra Jadeja 

Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin & Ravi Bishnoi 

Coach: Rahul Dravid // Captain: Rohit Sharma 

Coming to the schedule, the 5-match T20 series shall begin on July 29, and will end on August 9. While the first three T20 matches shall be played in the West Indies, the last two T20s shall be played in the United States. All matches shall begin from 8 pm IST.
