IPL 2024: Ranking the Best All-rounders for All 10 Teams

Chennai Super Kings, the standout team as we look at the ranking and rating of the best all-rounders of all 10 teams for IPL 2024.

A couple of years back, All-rounders were some of the most important players in the Indian Premier League, or T20 cricket for that matter. But starting in 2023, the BCCI changed the dimension of IPL cricket by introducing a new Impact player rule which kind of minimizes the role of part-time or make-shift all-rounders. Such is the implementation of the rule that if you are a meager batting all-rounder with minimal bowling experience, you are already a non-valuable asset in IPL.

However, if you are a quality all-rounder who is good in both departments like Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, etc., or you are a bowler who can pack a punch lower down the order, you are already proving to be an irreplaceable asset for your team. This was also shown in the recent auction where teams spent a fortune on players like Pat Cummins, Sam Curran, and Mitchell Starc, who are good bowlers, and can also give handy lower-order runs.

Given the impact player rule, teams are already playing it cautiously when it comes to hiring batting all-rounders. So, how have all teams stacked up their all-rounder arsenal for IPL 2024? Well, let’s analyze the key all-rounders for all 10 teams, and look at the ranking and rating for IPL 2024. As always, to arrive at the rating, we will use our tried and tested methodology to arrive at the ratings.

Methodology:

  • All-rounders are classified as two best all-rounders, one good backup all-rounder, and one decent backup all-rounder
  • All all-rounders are relatively rated on a scale of 10 against the benchmark all-rounder, basis their IPL and T20 performance in the last three years

Benchmark All-rounder for IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya

Rajasthan Royals

Number 10 on the list of all-rounders belongs to Rajasthan Royals with a rating of 7.26, and there is no iota of doubt on this. While the impact player rule benefits RR the most as they don’t have to depend on the all-rounders, if need be, all they have are all part-time make-shift all-rounders. Ashwin and Powell are the team’s best all-rounders, and Riyan Parag and Abid Mushtaq are key backups. But honestly, none of these four is qualified to be called as an all-rounder.

IPL 2024 All-rounders Rating for Rajasthan Royals (RR) – 7.26

Two Best All-rounders: Ravichandran Ashwin & Rovman Powell

Backup All-rounders: Riyan Parag & Abid Mushtaq

Gujarat Titans

At number 9, we have Gujarat Titans with a rating of 7.53 for their all-rounders. GT’s situation is almost similar to RR, except for the fact they have slightly more competent all-rounders. Rahul Tewatia and Azmatullah Omerzai are the team’s best all-rounders, but most likely Tewatia may not be utilized in bowling. The supporting all-rounders are decent for GT with the likes of Vijay Shankar, Shahrukh Khan, and Jayant Yadav.

IPL 2024 All-rounders Rating for Gujarat Titans (GT) – 7.53

Two Best All-rounders: Rahul Tewatia & Azmatullah Omerzai

Backup All-rounders: Vijay Shankar, Shahrukh Khan & Jayant Yadav

Delhi Capitals

At number 8, we have the Delhi Capitals team with a rating of 7.77 in the all-rounders category. Delhi have only four all-rounders; the least number of all-rounders in the side. But thankfully, three of these four all-rounders are good enough in both the departments. Be it Axar Patel, Mitchell Starc, or Lalit Yadav, all three are competent in both the departments, and will also play a key role in DC’s team. Other than these three, Sumit Kumar is a good emerging prospect to watch out for in IPL 2024.

IPL 2024 All-rounders Rating for Delhi Capitals (DC) – 7.77

Two Best All-rounders: Axar Patel & Mitchell Marsh

Backup All-rounders:  Lalit Yadav & Sumit Kumar

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Coming to number 7, we have the Royal Challengers Bangalore with a rating of 7.79 in all-rounders category. RCB have two solid all-rounders in the form of Aussie duo Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell. While these two maintain the rating for RCB, there is no big name in the backups category, which kind of reduces their rating below 8. Overall, the Indian backups will mostly be utilized in only one of the two categories they are competent in.

IPL 2024 All-rounders Rating for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) – 7.79

Two Best All-rounders: Glenn Maxwell & Cameron Green

Backup All-rounders: Tom Curran, Mahipal Lomror, Mayank Dagar, Manoj Bhandage & Swapnil Singh

Lucknow Super Giants

Talking about number 6, we have Lucknow Super Giants with an all-rounder rating of 8.10. LSG have all-rounders in bulk, and they will at least play 3-4 of them in their starting 11. There are some decent names in there like Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda, etc., but there is no outstanding all-rounder which kind of elevates their rating. Other than the three mentioned, the likes of Kyle Mayers, David Willey, and Krishnappa Gowtham will be crucial too.

SRH have three good all-rounders in the form of Marco Jansen, Washington Sundar, and Wanindu Hasaranga, who can not only give four good overs, but can also pack a punch lower down the order. KKR have Andre Russell as their best all-rounder, and he changes the rating for KKR quite positively. While Russell is a competent all-rounder, in the supporting role, KKR have decent options in the form of Sunil Narine, Sherfane Rutherford, Anukul Roy, and Venkatesh Iyer.

Two Best All-rounders: Andre Russell & Sunil Narine

Backup All-rounders: Sherfane Rutherford, Venkatesh Iyer, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul Roy & Angkrish Raghuvanshi

Punjab Kings

Talking about the number 3 position, we have Punjab Kings with a rating of 8.53 in the all-rounders category. PBKS have four solid all-rounders in their squad in the form of Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Sikandar Raza, and Chris Woakes. While Sam and Raza are competent in both departments, Livingstone and Woakes good in one department, and more than decent in another department. Other than these four, Harpreet and Rishi Dhawan are good backup all-rounders for PBKS.

IPL 2024 All-rounders Rating for Punjab Kings (PBKS) – 8.53

Two Best All-rounders: Liam Livingstone & Sam Curran

Backup All-rounders: Sikandar Raza, Chris Woakes, Rishi Dhawan, Harpreet Brar, Ashutosh Sharma, Tanay Thyagarajann & Vishwanath Singh

With Hardik Pandya’s arrival, MI have elevated their ranking from 10 in IPL 2023 to number 2 in IPL 2024. With Hardik Pandya as the benchmark all-rounder at 10 rating, MI also have Mohammad Nabi as a good all-rounder supporting him. Both will mostly feature in the starting 11, and their backups, Romario Shephard, Arjun Tendulkar, and Nehal Wadhera are good options too.

Chennai Super Kings

Finally, at numero uno, we have none other than Chennai Super Kings with a rating of 8.9 for their all-rounders. There shouldn’t be any debate on this as CSK are not only full on quantity but also quality when it comes to all-rounders. The team has three solid all-rounders in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, and Moeen Ali. It doesn’t end there as they have three more good backup all-rounders in the form of Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, and Shivam Dube.
