Rohit Sharma rested, while KL Rahul returns in all the three formats as we look at the official Team India squad for the Australia tour 2020-21.
Note: The following article has been updated after the recent announcement by BCCI.
Amidst the conduct of a successful IPL 2020, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the official Team India squads for the upcoming T20I, ODI, and Test series of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21.
It seems that the ongoing IPL 2020 has played a huge role in the selection of players. For instance, KL Rahul, who has had a horrid Red ball performance in the last 2 years is included in the squad solely on his IPL 2020 performance. Similarly, Varun Chakravarthy, who took an amazing 5-wicket haul the other night, has been selected in the T20I squad- his maiden National team call-up.
While not just selection, it seems even in the non-selection of players, IPL 2020 has played a major role. Rishabh Pant, who was the only designated wicket-keeper for Team India in all the three formats has now been dropped from the ODI and T20I squad. The reason could be fitness as he had sustained an injury in the ongoing IPL 2020, but it looks he has been dropped.
Sanju Samson and KL Rahul would be the designated keepers in the T20Is, whereas only KL Rahul would be the keeper in the ODIs, which is surprising as there is no back-up keeper. Shubman Gill, who is having a good IPL has been included in the ODI and Test squad.
From the outset, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja are the only players playing all the three formats. Whereas, Rohit Sharma, who was expected to play all the three formats has been kept on hold due to the injury he sustained in IPL 2020.
