IPL 2024: Best Predicted Retained Players List for All 10 Teams

A total of 187 players in focus as we look at the confirmed best retained squad and players list for all 10 teams ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction. 

The Indian team and almost all of the Indian players are currently busy playing the two hottest cricket tournaments, the World Cup 2023 and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Both the tournaments are extremely crucial. While one will bring glory to the country, the other will bring some unique talent from the country, which will create the base for IPL 2024.

It’s been only a few months since the conclusion of IPL 2023, but all 10 teams are already in the planning stage to arrive at their player retentions. The BCCI hasn’t announced the squad retention deadline or the Auction date, but we should expect the deadline to be somewhere in December, and the Auction to be somewhere in January. 

Even as the deadline may be around a month away, we can definitely analyze the current squad, and find out the possible retentions for all 10 teams. #1: Chennai Super Kings

The defending champions, Chennai Super Kings should retain 24 players in the squad. They are a team that rarely makes any changes in their squad irrespective of whether they win or lose. With a lot of youngsters in the squad, the only changes that CSK may make is to release Sisanda Magala and Kyle Jamieson along with Ambati Rayudu, who has retired. With 24 players retained, CSK will have a space for 1 overseas player.

WKs: Devon Conway (o) & MS Dhoni (c)

All-rounders: Ajay Mandal, Ben Stokes (o), Bhagath Varma, Dwaine Pretorius (o), Mitchell Santner (o), Moeen Ali (o), Nishant Sindhu, Ravindra Jadeja & Shivam Dube

#2: Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals were without their primary Captain Rishabh Pant in IPL 2023. With Pant returning, expect a few changes in the Delhi setup after they finished ninth last year. Delhi should mostly release Manish Pandey, Rovman Powell, Abhishek Porel, Lungi Ngidi, Mustafizur Rahman, and Pravin Dubey. Overall, Delhi should retain 20 players including 5 overseas players.

#3: Gujarat Titans

The Runner-up of IPL 2023, Gujarat Titans usually follow the CSK template when it comes to giving their players long rope. Expect Gujarat Titans to retain 21 players including 6 overseas players. The ones that GT might release are Odean Smith, Urvil Patel, Dasun Shanaka, and Pradeep Sangwan; all of whom haven’t looked convincing.

#4: Kolkata Knight Riders

The Kolkata Knight Riders had another below-average IPL 2023 season having finished seventh. The team was without their primary Captain, Shreyas Iyer, but he should return this year. But overall, expect a lot of changes in the KKR squad as they usually do. Expect KKR to release David Wiese, Shakib Al Hasan, Aarya Desai, Mandeep Singh, Kulwant Khejroliya, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Johnson Charles, Litton Das & N Jagadeesan.

#5: Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants had a good IPL 2023 having finished at the fourth position overall. LSG should mostly not do a lot of changes, and will only focus on releasing expensive players. So, expect LSG to release the likes of Manan Vohra, Avesh Khan, Amit Mishra, Swapnil Singh, Dan Sams, and Romario Shephard. Overall, LSG should retain 18 players including 6 overseas players.

#6: Mumbai Indians 

Talking about Mumbai Indians, who finished third overall in IPL 2023, there won’t be a lot of changes in the squad. The team should retain 5 overseas players, but should let go of the likes of Jason Behrendorff, Duan Jansen, Jhye Richardson, and Chris Jordan. Expect Mumbai Indians to retain 19 players with space for 6 players in the Auction.

#7: Punjab Kings

Talking about Punjab Kings, who finished eighth in the points table in IPL 2023, we should see them retaining 16 players with a lot of unused and less-potent players getting released. The players who could get released include Matthew Short, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Mohit Rathee, Shivam Singh, Baltej Singh, and Vidhwath Kaverappa.

Coming to Rajasthan Royals, who finished fifth in IPL 2023 should retain their core group of players with 21 players getting retained. RR should retain as many as 11 bowlers including 3 overseas bowlers. However, the players that RR could release are Abdul Basith, Akash Vashist, Kunal Rathore, and Jason Holder.

RCB finished sixth in the IPL 2023 points table, which isn’t good given the quality of players the team had. However, with a lot of underperforming players, expect RCB to release a good number of players with only 16 getting retained. The likes of players that RCB could release are Will Jacks, Dinesh Karthik, David Willey, Kedar Jadhav, Manoj Bhandage, Sonu Yadav, Wayne Parnell, Avinash Singh, Himanshu Singh, Karn Sharma, Rajan Kumar, Reece Topley & Siddharth Kaul.

Coming to Sunrisers Hyderabad, the team finished in tenth position in IPL 2023, but it looks unlikely SRH would make a lot of changes in the squad. Overall, expect SRH to retain 20 players including 5 overseas players. The players that SRH could release are Harry Brook, Sanvir Singh, and Vivrant Sharma
