IPL 2022: Final Retained Players List and Purse left for all Teams

Total 33 players retained as we look at the completed final retained players list for all teams ahead of the IPL 2022 Auction.

Last Updated: Feb 1, 2022

One of the biggest events of the year, the IPL 2022 player retentions are now officially out. With November 30 set as the deadline, the list was partially out before the deadline of 4 pm IST. But it was not until late evening on November 30 did the teams officially announced their player retentions.

A total of 27 players have been retained by 8 franchises. This includes 19 Indians and 8 foreign players. Of all the franchises, Punjab Kings are the only team that haven’t retained a single overseas player. Whereas KKR are the only franchise that has retained 2 overseas players.

In terms of players, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant have been retained in the highest bracket of INR 16 Cr. They are followed by Virat Kohli for INR 15 Cr. After Virat Kohli, the other costly players on the list are Kane Williamson and Sanju Samson for INR 14 Cr.

While we partially discussed the retentions so far, some of the big names to miss the bus may surprise you. The likes of KL Rahul, Rashid Khan, Shreyas Iyer, etc., have not been retained by their respective franchise. A few of the names should have been the first names on the list. While the exact reason is still not known, it could be because of the team culture and the salary that was being offered.

IPL 2022 Retained Players List:

According to bets.com.au, Australian players would be the hottest property in IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Not only the existing eight franchisees but also the two new teams would be after them. Nevertheless, before we get to the actual auction, let’s look at the final retained players list and the available purse value for all the teams for IPL 2022.

Chennai Super Kings:

Total Retained Players: 4

Players Retained: Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali & Ruturaj Gaikwad

Total Purse Available: INR 48 Cr

Chennai Super Kings retained a total of 4 players for IPL 2022. This includes their most lovable player MS Dhoni along with Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and young Ruturaj Gaikwad. Interestingly, MS Dhoni is their second retained player for INR 12 Cr. One can call it a selfless approach or being a team player, but Dhoni not taking the highest salary bracket is a surprise.

While Dhoni has been retained for INR 12 Cr, Ravindra Jadeja has been retained in the highest bracket for INR 16 Cr. England all-rounder, Moeen Ali has been retained in the third bracket for INR 8 Cr. Whereas IPL 2021 orange cap winner, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been retained for INR 6 Cr. Some big names that will go into the Auction pool include Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar.

Delhi Capitals:

Total Retained Players: 4

Players Retained: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw & Anrich Nortje

Total Purse Available: INR 47.5 Cr

Similar to CSK, Delhi Capitals retained 4 players with Rishabh Pant being their highest-paid player for INR 16 Cr. Apart from Pant, all the other players have been bargain buys. Axar Patel has been retained for INR 9 Cr instead of allotted 12 Cr. Prithvi Shaw has been retained for INR 7.5 Cr and Anrich Nortje has been retained for 6.5 Cr.

While the total salary being offered by Delhi Capitals is just INR 39 Cr, their purse deduction is more. As per IPL’s rule, if a team retains 4 capped players, a total of INR 42 Cr shall be deducted. However, as Anrich Nortje was retained for INR 6.5 Cr, which is 0.5 Cr more than allotted 6 Cr, Delhi Capitals’ total purse deduction stands at INR 42.5 Cr.

Kolkata Knight Riders:

Total Retained Players: 4

Players Retained: Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer & Sunil Narine

Total Purse Available: INR 48 Cr

Kolkata Knight Riders surprised everyone with their retentions. Their costliest player is Andre Russell for INR 12 Cr. However, as they retained 4 players, Russell’s purse deduction stands at INR 16 Cr. Similarly, Varun Chakravarthy has been retained for INR 8 Cr, but his purse deduction stands at INR 12 Cr.

Apart from these two, rising all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has been retained for INR 8 Cr. The all-rounder has been a revelation since the second half of IPL 2021, and his inclusion in the team has given rise to his stardom. But of all the retentions, Sunil Narine’s retention for INR 6 Cr seems the biggest surprise.

Mumbai Indians:

Total Retained Players: 4

Players Retained: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav & Kieron Pollard

Total Purse Available: INR 48 Cr

One of the most decorated franchises in IPL, Mumbai Indians retained a total of 4 players for IPL 2022. This includes Captain Rohit Sharma in the highest bracket for INR 16 Cr. Jasprit Bumrah is second on the list for INR 12 Cr. MI also sprung a surprise by retaining Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya for INR 8 Cr. Finally, MI retained their star overseas match-winner Kieron Pollard for INR 6 Cr.

Punjab Kings:

Total Retained Players: 2

Players Retained: Mayank Agarwal & Arshdeep Singh

Total Purse Available: INR 72 Cr

The biggest shocker of all the retentions has been the non-retention of KL Rahul. The former PBKS captain is possibly the most valuable player in IPL at the moment. He should have been definitely been the first player to get retained, but owing to franchise culture and financial valuation, KL Rahul might have decided not to get retained.

Instead, Punjab Kings decided to retain their other star opener, Mayank Agarwal for INR 12 Cr. However, the purse deduction for Mayank shall be INR 14 Cr. PBKS also retained Arshdeep Singh as the uncapped player for INR 4 Cr. The pacer has been a star performer for them, and INR 4 cr seems a good bet for the Punjab pacer.

Rajasthan Royals:

Total Retained Players: 3

Players Retained: Sanju Samson, Jos Butter & Yashasvi Jaiswal

Total Purse Available: INR 62 Cr

Rajasthan Royals seems to have been very calculative when it comes to IPL 2022 retentions. Given the number of star players they had, RR decided to retain Sanju Samson for INR 14 Cr, Jos Buttler for INR 10 Cr, and uncapped Yashasvi Jaiswal for INR 4 Cr. However, they let go of the likes of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Hopefully, they purchase them in the auction.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

Total Retained Players: 3

Players Retained: Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell & Mohammed Siraj

Total Purse Available: INR 57 Cr

RCB had really tough choices to make when it came to retentions. While Kohli and Maxwell were sure-shot retentions, RCB decided to retain Mohammed Siraj as their third-choice option ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, or Devdutt Padikkal. Overall, RCB retained Virat Kohli for INR 15 CR, Glenn Maxwell for INR 11 Cr, and Mohammed Siraj for INR 7 Cr.

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

Total Retained Players: 3

Players Retained: Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad & Umran Malik

Total Purse Available: INR 68 Cr

Similar to Punjab Kings, the second-biggest shocker of the night was the non-retention of Rashid Khan. Probably the best spinner in the world at the moment, Rashid should have been the first name on the list for SRH, but given the salary expectations, Rashid might have decided to opt-out.

Overall, SRH retained their captain Kane Williamson as the first-choice retention for INR 14 Cr. Apart from Williamson, SRH retained two uncapped Indians, Abdul Samad and Umran Malik for INR 4 Cr. With 3 retentions, SRH have a purse value of INR 68 Cr, which is the second-best at the moment.

Team Ahmedabad:

Total Retained Players: 3

Players Retained: Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan & Shubman Gill

Total Purse Available: INR 52 Cr

Ahmedabad retained 3 players ahead of IPL 2022 Auction. They retained Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan for INR 15 Cr. Whereas opener Shubman Gill was retained for INR 8 Cr. Meanwhile, the team has INR 52 Cr available with them, and would be looking to hire around 18 odd players from it.

Lucknow Super Giants:

Total Retained Players: 3

Players Retained: KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis & Ravi Bishnoi

Total Purse Available: INR 59 Cr

Lucknow retained a total of 3 players ahead of IPL 2022 Auction. This includes KL Rahul as the joint-highest expensive player for INR 17 Cr. Marcus Stoinis has been retained for INR 9.2 Cr, but his purse deduction is INR 10 Cr. Whereas uncapped Ravi Bishnoi has been retained for INR 4 Cr. Meanwhile, the team has INR 59 Cr available with them for the auction.
