MATCH SUMMARY:
World Cup 2019, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan: Words cannot define the genius of the Bangladeshi legend, Shakib Al Hasan, who has delivered yet another sensational performance to help Bangladesh remain alive in the tournament.
Batting first, Bangladesh had a slightly shabby start. However, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib built a good partnership that took Bangladesh to 82-2 in 17 overs.
Bangladesh didn’t repeat the mistake that India did as they kept milking singles and doubles in the middle-overs.
Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim made superb fifties as Bangladesh scored a defendable 262-7 in 50 overs.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman was once again the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan as he took 3 important wickets. Meanwhile, Rashid Khan went wicketless with his spell of 0-52 in 10 overs.
THE CHASE:
Afghanistan did have a good start as they did almost every time in this tournament.
However, the middle-order failed to capitalize on the start once again as after being 103-2 at one stage, Afghanistan nose-dived to 136-6, and then ultimately bundled out for 200 in 47 overs.
Shakib Al Hasan was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with his stunning spell of 5-29 in 10 overs.
In the process, Shakib Al Hasan became only the third player in World Cup history after Kapil Dev and Yuvraj Singh to score 50+ runs and take 5 wickets in a match.
So, Bangladesh remain alive in the tournament as they now have 7 points from 7 games. Afghanistan, meanwhile remain winless in the tournament.
WHAT WENT WRONG FOR AFGHANISTAN?
- The inability of Afghanistan bowlers to build pressure in the middle overs.
- The lack of big partnerships from Afghanistan batsmen.
- No intent to capitalize on loose balls to release the pressure.
