Australia vs India 2020: Second Test Player Report Card

India vs Aus 2020: Ajinkya Rahane, the stand-out player as we look at the player performance report card for the second Test between India and Australia.

What a turnaround this has been for the Indian team, who gave a rock bottom performance in the previous Test by registering their lowest score in Test Cricket history, and then made a stunning comeback by giving one of their most dominant performance in Test Cricket history.

To add to it, India were without their leader and best batsman, Virat Kohli. They were also without their 3 key players, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, and Rohit Sharma. There were two new debutants in the team. Even then, India bossed the occasion under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane to level the series 1-1 after registering an 8-wicket win.

So, looking at the performance of all the players, what rating do they get? Let’s look at the Player Performance Report card for the India vs Australia second Test match.

Bowling: We have analyzed the bowling performances basis the bowling rating calculated from the overall aspect of the game such as wickets taken, consistency, the number of match-winning and good spells, and relative percentage of Team wickets.

#6: Shubman Gill (India) – 7.2

Inns: 2 || Runs: 80 || Avg: 80 || HS: 45

A debut that Shubman Gill and the entire country would be proud of. He came into the team on account of underperforming Prithvi Shaw, and hence expectations and pressure were very high on Shubman Gill. He played with intent and aggression, and didn’t succumb to pressure as his counterpart, Mayank did. Gill scored 80 runs in two innings, and he remained not-out on 35(36) in the fourth innings to help India cross the line. Overall, Shubman Gill gets a rating of 7.2 for his performance.

#5: Mohammed Siraj (India) – 7.9

Inns: 2 || Wkts: 5 || Avg: 22.2 || SR: 44 || BBI: 3/37

Just like Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj made a fantastic debut. Filling the shoes of Mohammed Shami wasn’t easy, but Siraj did that with perfection in only his debut Test match. For a bowler, who relies more on swing than bounce, Siraj bowled in the right channel throughout the match, and was rewarded for it. He managed to take 5 wickets in 2 innings at an average of 22.2 and a good strike rate of 44. Overall, Mohammed Siraj gets a rating of 7.9 for his performance.

#4: Mitchell Starc (Aus) – 8

Inns: 2 || Wkts: 4 || Avg: 24.5 || SR: 45 || BBI: 3/78

Ended on the losing side, but Starc was brilliant in both the innings of the Test match; although we couldn’t see much of him in the second innings. Starc took a healthy 3-wicket haul in the first innings, and 1 solo wicket in the second innings. Just like he did to Shaw in the first match, Starc removed Mayank in both the innings this time. Overall, Mitchell Starc gets a rating of 8 for his performance.

#3: Jasprit Bumrah (India) – 8.9

Inns: 2 || Wkts: 6 || Avg: 18.3 || SR: 43 || BBI: 4/56

It felt like a deja-vu for Jasprit Bumrah as he produced yet another performance worth remembering in line with his 2018 Boxing Day performance. Being the leader of the squad, a lot was riding on Bumrah, and he delivered like a leader. Bumrah accounted for 6 wickets from 2 innings at an average of 18.3 and a strike rate of 43. Overall, Bumrah gets a rating of 8.9 for his performance.

#2: Ravindra Jadeja (India) – 9.3

Mats: 1 || Runs: 57 || Ba Avg: 57 || Wkts: 3 || Bo Avg: 14.3

One of the best all-rounders going around in Test cricket, Ravindra Jadeja performed exceptionally well in all the areas; batting, bowling, and fielding. He supported Rahane superbly in the first innings scoring a valuable 57 down the order. In the bowling department, he gave away just 43 runs, and accounted for 3 wickets. Also, who can forget his catch at the start of the match, which set the tone for the Indian fielding. Overall, Jadeja gets a rating of 9.3 for his performance.

#1: Ajinkya Rahane (India) – 10

Inns: 2 || Runs: 139 || Avg: 139 || HS: 114

The captain of the squad, Ajinkya Rahane led by example in the batting department. He scored a magnificent century in the first innings that gave India the much-needed lead. In the second innings, he scored an unbeaten 25 that helped India win only their second Test while chasing in Australia. But, what stood Rahane apart was his captaincy, which was filled with proper bowling changes, and accurate field positioning. Overall, Rahane gets a rating of a perfect 10 for his performance.

Apart from these 6, the other top players have the following rating,

  1. Nathan Lyon (Aus) – 7.8
  2. Ravichandran Ashwin (India): 7.8
  3. Pat Cummins (Aus) – 6.9
