MATCH SUMMARY

Batting first, Bangladesh openers got off to a flying start. The opening pair of Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar added 60 runs in just 8 overs for the first wicket.

After losing both the openers, the experienced, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan then scored valuable fifties as Bangladesh ended on a mammoth 330-6 in 50 overs.

Mushfiqur scored 78(80) with 8 fours, while Shakib scored 75(84) with 8 fours and a six. For South Africa, Andile Phehlukwayo took 2-51 in his 10 overs.

Chasing a mammoth 331, South African openers started cautiously having scored 49 in their first 10 overs. After losing Quinton de Kock in the 10th over, Faf du Plessis and Aiden Markram then had a decent partnership as they added another 53 for the second wicket.

The third and fourth-wicket partnership too was decent with 45 runs. However, these small partnerships were not enough as South Africa fell short of the target by 21 runs.

The main issue with the South African chase was that no batsman looked to play a longer knock as everyone perished after getting a good start.

So, Bangladesh have begun their World Cup 2019 campaign on a superb note, and after 3 consecutive losses, an Asian team finally wins a match in this tournament.

South Africa have now lost two in a row, and they would be under tremendous pressure against India on June 6 as a defeat there would almost end their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.
