MATCH SUMMARY:

It has been a fairytale match for Team India as almost everyone contributed in their memorable win over Australia at World Cup 2019.

Batting first, Indian openers started cautiously as they mustered only 22 in their first 7 overs.

However, both being set, their next 12 overs yielded 78 runs as they completed yet another century partnership.

After Rohit’s sensible 57(70), Virat and Dhawan carried on as they registered the second hundred runs partnership of the match.

In the meantime, Dhawan reached his third World Cup century off just 95 balls. With India 220 after 37 overs, Indian batsmen shifted gears as they went berserk thereafter adding 132 in the next 13 overs.

Virat Kohli played second fiddle in his 82(77) as Pandya’s 48(27), Dhoni’s 27(14) and Rahul’s 11(3) helped India reach a mammoth total of 352-5 in 50 overs.

Almost all Australian bowlers were belted by the Indian batsmen with Starc going for the most giving away 74 runs in his 10 overs.

THE CHASE:

So, Chasing a mammoth 353, Australia needed big partnerships, and a strong contribution from their top order.

Aaron Finch and David Warner, however, got Australia off to a slightly slowish start as they added only 61 runs for the first wicket in 13 overs.

David Warner played a rather surprising innings in his 56(84), and this knock would be debated for long.

With Australia requiring another 220 runs from the last 25 overs, Steve Smith scored 69(70), while Maxwell and Alex Carey tried their best scoring 28(14) and 55(35) respectively.

In the end, Australia fell short of the target by 36 runs as Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 3 wickets.

So, an amazing win for Team India as they posted their first 300+ score against Australia in the World Cup.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR AUS?

  1. Inability to create pressure in the middle overs.
  2. David Warner’s slowest fifty created pressure on the other Aussie batsmen.
  3. Too much of an ask for Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey to finish the game for Australia.

KEY MOMENTS:

  1. Virat Kohli’s reaction after MS Dhoni hit a six off Mitchell Starc’s bowling.
  2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 2 wickets in an over dismissing Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis.
  3. Alex Carey’s scoring the fastest fifty of the tournament off 25 balls.
