IPL 2024: Ranking the Confirmed Squad List for All 10 Teams

CSK and MI, the standout on paper as we look at the rating and ranking of all 10 teams basis their squad players for IPL 2024.

If there is one thing that separates the Indian Premier League from most of the sporting tournaments across the world, it is the competitiveness of the tournament. Given the preference for Auction, and an upper cap budget to select players, every team in the tournament is able to acquire quality players in their side.

The year 2024 is no different as every team is equipped with quality match winners in their side. Be it CSK, who have Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, etc. Be it Mumbai Indians who have Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, etc. Or be it Punjab Kings, who have Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, etc. There’s quality in all sides in the IPL. 

So, with the official data in front of us, how about we compare the final squad players of all 10 teams for IPL 2024, and rank them accordingly? Well, to arrive at the rankings, we will compare the rating of the teams across 6 major categories, viz., Openers, Middle-order, Finishers, All-rounders, Spinners, and Pacers. Finally, a cumulative rating is arrived by combining the rating across all these categories.

To arrive at the player ratings, we will rate all players on a scale of 10 basis the benchmark player across each category. The benchmark players across each category are as follows

  • Benchmark Finisher: Heinrich Klaasen
  • Benchmark All-rounder: Hardik Pandya
  • Benchmark Spinner: Rashid Khan

#10: Delhi Capitals Squad Players Rating for IPL 2024 – 8.23

At number 10, we have the Delhi Capitals team with a cumulative rating of 8.23. This isn’t less rating by any standards as the difference between rank 1 and rank 10 is just 0.48 rating points. But where DC miss the most is their all-rounder department, which has a rating of 7.51. There are only two good all-rounders in the side, Axar Patel and Mitchell Marsh, and absolutely no backups. But where DC are good is the pace department, which has a rating of 8.64. Aside from these, DC have a rating of 8.44 for openers, 8.48 for middle-order, 8.19 for finishers, and 7.96 for spinners.

#9: Royal Challengers Bangalore – RCB Squad Players Rating for IPL 2024 – 8.24

At number 9, we have the RCB team with a cumulative rating of 8.24. If there is one area where RCB lack a lot, it is their spinners, which has a rating at 6.92. But this was bound to happen with Karn Sharma being their leading spinner. But with batters like Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Green, and Maxwell, RCB are extremely strong in the batting department with openers rating at 9.06 and middle-order rating at 9.14. Aside from these, RCB have a rating of 7.64 for finishers, 7.77 for all-rounders, and 8.47 for pacers.

#8: Gujarat Titans Squad Players Rating for IPL 2024 – 8.34

Coming to number 8, we have the GT team with a cumulative rating of 8.34. The loss of Hardik Pandya hurts GT the most as their all-rounder and finisher rating comes down to 7.53 and 8.44 respectively. But their strength is their pace and spin department, which has a rating of 8.72 and 8.56 respectively. Aside from these, GT have decent openers and middle-order rating of 8.37 and 8.36 respectively.

#7: Rajasthan Royals – RR Squad Players Rating for IPL 2024 – 8.38

Coming to number 7, we have the RR team with a cumulative rating of 8.38. RR have a strong batting unit with openers rating at 8.67 and middle-order rating at 9.06. Similarly, they are extremely good in the spin department with a rating of 8.75. But what they lack the most is all-rounders, where they have a rating of 7.26. Aside from these, RR have a rating of 8.22 for finishers, and 8.14 for pacers.

At number 6, we have the LSG team with a cumulative rating of 8.51. LSG are a strong side with a rating of 8 and above in all departments. But, relatively, LSG are weak in all-rounders, spin, and pace departments with a rating of 8.10, 8.19, and 8.05 respectively. However, where they are the strongest is the middle-order batting, where their rating stands at 9.41. Aside from these, LSG have a rating of 8.67 for openers and 8.53 for finishers.

At number 5, we have the Punjab Kings team with a cumulative rating of 8.55. PBKS have extremely strong finishers and pacers with a rating of 8.78 and 9.27 respectively. Similarly, PBKS are good in opening, middle-order, and all-rounder departments with a rating of 8.33, 8.53, and 8.53 respectively. But where they lack the most is the spin department with a rating of 7.77.

At number 4, we have the SRH team with a cumulative rating of 8.56. SRH did pretty well in the Auction, and as a result, have accumulated a brilliant all-round squad. They are pretty strong in the middle-order department with a rating of 9.45; the highest among all teams. They also have strong finishers and pacers with a rating of 8.89 and 8.44 respectively. While they are decent in the opening department with a rating of 8.10, they relatively lack is the all-rounders and spin departments, where they have a rating of 8.22 and 8.12 respectively.

Coming to number 3, we have the KKR team with a cumulative rating of 8.61. Given their retentions and Auction sequence, KKR would be very happy to find themselves at the number 3 position. There is no major weakness for KKR with a rating of 8.38 for openers, 8.31 for all-rounders, and 8.16 for pacers. But where they are stronger are middle-order, finishers, and spin departments, where they have a rating of 9.09, 8.83, and 8.94 respectively.

At the number 2 position, we have the MI team with a cumulative rating of 8.62. MI have a solid opening combination with a rating of 8.83. They have a solid middle-order with a rating of 9.39. And they also have a solid pace department with a rating of 8.78. Similarly, they are decent in the all-rounder department with a rating of 8.33. But where they relatively lack are the finisher and spin departments, where they have a rating of 7.97 and 8.02 respectively.

CSK rank 1 when it comes to the best squad on paper for IPL 2024. CSK have a well-balanced squad in all departments with their best strength being their leadership and spin attack with a rating of 8.96. They have a great set of openers with a rating of 8.81. They also have a superb all-rounder pack with a rating of 8.85. Similarly, they have a great set of pacers with a rating of 8.55. The only thing that is relatively weak is their middle-order, which has a rating of 8.33 (worst among all 10 teams).
